Former Seattle Seahawks linebacker Baraka Atkins has been signed to a 2010 contract with the Denver Broncos.

Former Seattle Seahawks linebacker Baraka Atkins has been signed to a 2010 contract with the Denver Broncos.

The Denver Broncos on Thursday signed outside linebacker/defensive end Baraka Atkins to a future contract, it was announced. He will be officially added to Denver’s roster at the conclusion of the 2009 NFL season in February.

This guy’s young and has some playing experience; like all the future contract players, he’ll be fighting for a roster spot in August, but he actually stands a good shot. The rest of the press release after the jump.

Atkins (6-foot-4, 268 pounds) is a fourth-year defensive end who totaled 28 tackles (19 solo), including two sacks (7 yds.), in 21 games (0 starts) for Seattle from 2007-08. Atkins also saw time on San Francisco’s active roster in 2009, but did not appear in a game.

Atkins entered the NFL as Seattle’s fourth-round selection (120th overall) of the 2007 NFL Draft from the University of Miami. He played in 49 games (45 starts) for the Hurricanes, totaling 175 tackles (84 solo), 18 sacks and nine pass breakups.

Atkins was a standout performer at Booker High School in Sarasota, Fla. His father, Fredd Atkins, has served in public office in the city of Sarasota since 1985, including a stint as the mayor of the city. Baraka Atkins was born Sept. 28, 1984, in Sarasota, Fla.

The Seahawks have a bad defensive line and Baraka Atkins couldn't make our team. You can have him.

I don't think anyone's confusing him for the next LT, but a young player with actual NFL experience is just fine for the role to which the Broncos signed him.

Good point Kyle. Also, often times the difference between a no name player to a good player is the scheme they are in. Just making it into the NFL proves he has an elite skill set. Maybe he won't pan out to be anything BUT you never know until you give him a shot.
