Well, that will end any talk of an undefeated season.

The 6-1 Denver Broncos‘ toughest game of 2009 came at the hands of a desperate Baltimore Ravens (4-3) squad that might have saved their season with the win. After six straight victories, Josh McDaniels and company will have to learn how to deal with a new kind of feeling: a loss.

This loss was no fluke, either. The Ravens came out of their bye looking much more like the team that advanced to the AFC Championship Game last year than the team that had dropped three straight. The Broncos were out-pushed, out-hustled, and out-smarted through four quarters in a game in which they never held a lead.

Kyle Orton, who had been masterful in fourth quarters this season, was quieted to barely surpassing 100 passing yards late in the fourth during the Broncos’ final drive (when Denver was down by 23). This against the Ravens’ 23rd-ranked pass defense, which had had trouble in coverage and pressure all season.

The Ravens had none of those troubles today. They hustled Orton, handled receivers, and dominated at the line of scrimmage.

Defensively, the Broncos had their worst game of 2009. They found a way to put pressure on QB Joe Flacco in the second half, but Flacco escaped the grasp of defenders time and time again. Against a Broncos defense that had allowed only two third-down conversions in the second half all season, Flacco completed 14 straight after halftime.

Finishing the beatdown was the Ravens’ special teams, which nearly blocked every one of Mitch Berger‘s punts and returned the second half kickoff 95-yards for a touchdown. On their own return units, Eddie Royal had no breathing room from his blockers (and he didn’t do himself any favors, either).

The Broncos didn’t make a ton of mistakes this game. Knowshon Moreno‘s fumble certainly hurt, and there were a few (perhaps several) missed blocking assignments. But for the most part, the Ravens just beat the Broncos, in every phase.

It was as dominating a loss as the Broncos felt 10 months ago.

The bright side is that the Broncos are still 6-1, hold a dominating lead in the AFC West, and have a long week to prepare for Pittsburgh on Monday night. Hopefully they can regain some of the momentum they lost during the bye week.

  • ericinvegas

That was painful to watch, but hopefully it's a learning experience. The Ravens looked like a team that rested during their bye while the Broncos looked like a team that hiccuped during theirs.

  • pwsbronco

Just one loss, don't think anyone was really believing we were going to go undefeated this year.
Lots to fix after this game, use it as a learning experience and move on. Good teams lose, Giants, pats and the ravens just had a 3 game slide before we helped them fix that problem. So we will let the Steelers help us fix our little slide.
Learn, fix and move on Bronco's. You got your butts handed to you today no mistake about it, can't even blame it on one thing or two. Just got out played all the way around.
-Move on, looking for a 7-1 record after monday…..hoowaa…Bronco's

  • milehighs

Kyol Orton cant through the deep ball.So the BRoncos are very limited on thier play calls. So now teams figured out that. Now the broncos will loose if the dont put in Branstater.Fire Kyel Orton is just like Jake Plumer but jake didnt get scared like this scared little boy did.FIRE KYEL ORTON HE SUCKS ASS.PUT IN BRANDSTATER WE WILL LOOSE ARE ASSES NOW.WE HAVE NO CHIOCE.KYEL ORTON ALMOST GOT PICK SIX TIME THIS GAME.RTAVENS READ BRONCOS LIKE A BOOCK.WE NEED THE DEEP BALL.NOT FAG ORTON.

  • mikebirty

It was poor. The strong points – tackling and the O-Line – became weak points. Nothing good to look back on here.

Bring on Big Ben and the Steelers.

  • pwsbronco

Got to love the so called fans that spit venom at the first loss. Would be nice if we could just point at Kyle, that would be to easy to blame just one person for our losses this year. What about the other team and their ability to defend, gotta give credit where it is due. Don't recall anyone bitching about how bad Kyle played last week when he was just about flawless.
People act as if they knew what the offensive plan was so they can blame just one player. Watch the game again and maybe you can add several others to share in the loss….. It is win as a team and lose as a team and that is what I believe it should always be. Just look at the last few years with the Broncos and team was not part of the plan….
Pretty bad when fans jump when we lose, but then again I guess a real fan believes a team should never lose…….I will stick with my team no matter what….Love the Bronco's

    hahaha
    now that's funny.

    unless you were serious.
in which case, are you nuts?

  • http://manchester-architects.com T-Money

He was serious… That's why it's REALLY funny. hahaha

  • http://manchester-architects.com T-Money

One thing that really makes me bitter about this game was the play calling (and the play by play announcers…but that’s a different story). This was not Josh McDaniel’s finest hour. Running screens, sweeps and third and long running between the tackles just doesn’t make sense to me. Looking back on the Patriots game and how we were able to through something like the wild horses together and make it incredibly successful in only one week…to this game where we often times look very predictable and “same old stuff different day” looks…I was almost shocked that McDaniel’s don’t put something my spicy together.

Secondly, you need to give a lot of credit to Baltimore. They had they backs against the wall facing a HUGE hole in their division and the possibility of watching Cincinnati and Pittsburg running away with it…And they punch us in the mouth.

They ate up our offensive line, making veterans like Ben Hamilton and Casey Wiegmann look like rookies. Even iron man Ryan Clady was getting beat and as a result there was virtually zero time for Orton to do anything, let alone get into any sort of rhythm. Brandon Stokley, Tony Scheffler, and Brandon Marshall were non-factors which didn’t help anything and I think Jabar Gafney had like 2 catches. That in itself pretty much sums up our offense today.

And the punting situation? It looked like we downgraded to me. A net punting average of 36.3 yards on 8 kicks…are you kidding me? What is that?

Defensively we can beat ourselves up. With the exception of the touchdown in third quarter our defense held its ground for the majority of the game. Still we came out flat and had virtually no pass rush which allowed Flaco to find the open man. However, there were a lot of no calls, particularly on Doom that I saw but I can’t pin this on of the refs. Andre Goodmen had a sub par day and Jack Williams got his ass handed to him on a silver platter. But then again when you’re offense is always on the sidelines and your defense is always on the field…something got to give.

However there were some positives that I was able to see. Knowshon Moreno is a beast and he fights for every yard. He was tearing it up and a few missed tackles away from breaking a big one. I really like the fire and the passion that this kid brings to the table and I can’t wait for him to have a huge game. Our defense was also still really good today. There were a lot of times that we were able to blow the play up in the back field and make tackles for losses. We also did a really good job holding the Ray Rice to only 84 yards. More so, we held the Ravens to only 292 yards of total offense. There’s still a lot to be happy about so don’t abandon ship just yet.

All in all I hope that we can bounce back next week and get back into our rhythm. It’s a tough loss but I don’t think that it’s a major cause for concern. Now we know what it feels like to lose, and the bitter taste it leaves in your mouth. It’s going to be interesting to see if we are able to leave it on the field, watch some game film and move onto next week. The upside is that we are back at home where the last time the Steelers came to town they killed our super bowl appearance. Time for some pay back.

  • pete

I don't think anybody honestly believed that we would go 16-0. You know what they say, you learn more after a loss than after a win. So hopefully we learn some things and get to fixing them. Let's stick it to the Steelers next week in our house!

  • MILEHIGHS

Kyel Orton suck ass on all the games we played this year.the rest off the team carried him all games. The Ravens knew that so the forced the broncos te beat them with Kyel Orten. You guys dont see it you will when the Steelers beat that ass next week.Put a real qb in and the Broncos are super bowle champs this year. Never with pussy Kyel Orten.

FIRE KYEL ORTON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!YOU GUYS WILL AGREE NEXT WEEK.MY BRONCOS WERE ON RECORD PACE UNTILL FAG ORTON CANT PULL HIS WAIT.START BRAND STARTER,BETTER YET BRING BACK JAY CUTLER

  • MILEHIGHS

Were is Jay cutler if he was the qb still. We win the superbowl. Not with scared little Kyel Orten.

  • Depressed SF

It's going to be repeated a lot here, but that's because it needs repeating. To anyone who see's the sky falling because of this game needs to PUT THINGS IN PERSPECTIVE. What would you have thought if before the season you were told that this team would start 6-1, with the one loss coming against at Baltimore Raven's team at home with their backs against the wall and needing a win in the worst way. Anyone here or anywhere would trade their left nut for that kind of start. It's a long season, let's not get spoiled.

Look at the Giants. No need to panic and scream until they do something like lose three straight.

  • http://manchester-architects.com T-Money

I pushed the wrong button. I disslike this statement.

  • MILEHIGHS

Thier comes a time were you need a qb to win games not manege the Kyel Orton suck and Ive said that every week since the shity trade.
becuse of that broncos will fall the rest of the year.Hate to say it .but the truth hurts.Put in Brandstater

  • pwsbronco

What is with all the ranting and cussing? Can't you have an opinion without making yourself look like a 9 year old that is throwing a hissy fit because mommy won't listen to you?
You will be surprised what being civil and acting like a boy will do for you. My god, I can't believe there are still people like this out there. But then again I must have thought we were going to go 16-0.
Be a fan and grow up a little and maybe somebody will take you seriously. Be respectful and you will get it back…Just a thought but I am sure it will whistle over your head…..

  • Pete

Brandstater isn't any good! People say that the best job to have in the NFL is the backup QB. That's because if the starter struggles at all, everyone will fall in love with the person who isn't playing.
Brandstater would lead us to a 6-10 record. He isn't ready to be a starter. People put too much stock into his preseason game against nothing but backups and people who aren't in the NFL anymore.
Our team will be fine with Orton. It's just 1 game. Everyone get's handled throughout the year. This was our week. Guess what, it won't be the last week either. we'll lose again. What we hope for is to get into the playoffs and hopefully start winning the games that mean something.

  • MrEast

The 30 points are centainly deceiving. The defense played well until the offense had too many 3 and outs. The offense completed 3 first downs the whole game out of 13. The offense was only of the field for 26 minutes. They'res only so much a defense can do against a talented offense so many times.

  • broncosfaninal

Can we ban this guy from the board? I can tolerate one or two negative posts, but he's just ranting like a fool (plus he can't even spell).

  • broncosfaninal

Hey – can we just call it like it is please? The Baltimore Ravens flat out came to play at home, after a bye week, for a game they had to win to stay in contention. They played really well and just took it to the Broncos. All this negative talk is really unwarranted. Sure the Broncos aren't perfect at this point, but what team is? The Colts almost lost today at home to the 49ers. I'm sure this loss is tough for a lot of fans, but I guarantee that the Broncos will bounce back next week against the Steelers (after the special teams, o-line, and receivers are given a butt-kicking in practice for a lousy game).

  • http://broncotalk.net Kyle

If he can vent respectfully he can vent.

One more homosexual slur and he will be banned though.

  • pwsbronco

Thanks Kyle, much gratitude. We all hate losing especially after waiting 2 weeks to play and then to be handled like this is hard to take. but we will see this sort of game again and now we won't have to listen to foolish statements by certain fans….Thanks again Kyle. now lets heal and move on…Go Bronc's

  • TheTroglodyte

Milehighs is a complete moron who apparently never watched Cutler play before and is probably not even a real Bronco fan. There is a difference between venting and being stupid.

The play calling pissed me off the entire game. Screen screen screen. The only thing I can think of is McDaniels didn't think the o-line could protect Orton enough to take more shots down field and was trying to play the field position game and hope for a lucky break. I don't like the decision either way but hey I'm not in the middle of it all trying to protect my qb from having his ass handed to him.

The loss was a good one. It exposed some problems we have and that is always a good thing at this point in the season. Even better because Pittsburgh is really going to dial up the pressure on our offensive line so we will have a great idea how we are going to respond to a team that plays a very similar style of ball. The last thing we needed was to skate into the playoffs and then find out about some of these issues.

  • http://manchester-architects.com T-Money

    Agreed. Nicely put!

  • milehighs

It doesnt matter it is what it is.Broncos have an out standing foot ball team except are qb.No matter how good broncos offence is the guy who gets the ball every game has to be a half way desent qb for good team are only as good as the qb is.
THE BRONCOS ARE TO PREDICTABLE WITH SCARED,NO ARE ORTON.
ONCE AGAIN FIRE KYEL ORTON.TRY BRANDSTATER.

  • milehighs

Can not call plays if your qb cant run them.nother word cant through the deep ball, doesnt have any arm . Only going to have so many plays you can call. The Ravens showed the worl the Broncos week spot.Broncos got to change or will loose.
Look whos acting like a kid.dont like what iI have to say.So yo going to put me down and cry like little babbys.
    ONCE AGAIN TRUTH HURTS.

  • justin

If you guys had joe flacco you would be 16-0.

the dude is a stud and picked apart your defense on 3rd down. The dude is joe cool.

Plus you're not a vertical team…only guys that throw bombs like Brett Farve can take advantage of our weaker secondary.

You guys are well disciplined though and Orton can manage a game.

  • steeplebomb

I don't see how you can put all the blame on Kyle Orton. He didn't play great but neither did the rest of the offense.

And another thing. Let me let you in on a little secret. Are you ready? Take a deep breath. Jay Cutler isn't as good as you think he is. No QB is good when he has no pass protection. In fact, look at Cutler's stats in Chicago. Pretty unimpressive. He threw another interception today and no touchdowns. Against the Browns. Stellar. He's not nearly good enough to carry a team to a Super Bowl. He's no Peyton Manning.

  • justin

FYI. Orton beat the ravens as a rookie back in 2005. He's a good game manager…but we didn't have Joe Flacco back then.

If Jay Cutler was your QB you guys would have lost by 50 points with all the interceptions he would throw.

Cutler may wow you one game…but then he will throw 5 interception and pout on the sidelines. He's not a winner and finds ways to lose games…while Orton finds ways to win games.

Your team is built on great defense, running the ball, and managing the game. That's how the ravens won it all back in 2000 and if we didn't get rid of Dilfer for Elvis Grbec we would have won more.

Just my take as a Ravens fan.

  • TheTroglodyte

What hurts is your pathetic grammar and inability to put together a coherent sentence. Did you quit school after failing the 2nd grade? My god man there is a spell check running as you are typing your posts!

  • steeplebomb

Agreed. As much as I hate to say it, a lot of this comes down to our offensive scheme. It seemed that the Ravens were able to read it very well. I remember in a preseason interview McD said something like “this offense will do things people have never seen before.” I want to see some of that. Tired of screens and negative yardage up the gut.

  • milehighs

Ill rewrite what has ben removed from the list whith ot any case word.
FIRE KYEL ORTON HE'S BRINGS THE REST OF THE TEAM DOWN.HE PLAYS SCARED AND HE HAS NO ARM WHAT SO EVER.RAVEN FOND THE BRONCOS WEEK SPOT .THEY NEED TO CHANGE IT.AS A FAN THE BRONCOS NEED TO CHANGE.EVERYONE WILL AGREE WITH ME NEXT WEEK.
NOW IF YOU WANT TO BAN ME FOR THAT SO BE IT.YOU GUYS CANT HANDLE A OPINION DONT READ WHAT I HAVE TO SAY OR RESPOND TO IT.BUT DEEP DOWN INSIDE YOU KNOW IM RIGHT SO INSTED OF DEALING WITH MY OPINION.YOU WANT TO BANT ME.
SO I WRITE MY LAST WORDS BEFORE IM BAND.

    GO BRONCOS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
DONT LET THE KYEL ORTON BLUES HOLD YOU DOWN.

  • TheTroglodyte

Justin, with the amount of time Orton had to throw I think I could have suited up and played solid defense in the Ravens secondary (not that they didn't play well because they obviously did). Joe cool's ability to pick us apart on 3rd down had as much to do with the fact our defense was exhausted from being on the field as well. Had they been fresher, it wouldn't have been quite as easy pickings as it was.

That said, Joe and the rest of the Ravens played a phenomenal game. Grats on the big win and I liked your take on it all.

  • TheTroglodyte

His name is “Kyle” not “Kyel”. “been” not “ben”. “with” not “whith”. “out” not “ot”. “he brings” not “he's brings”. “whatsoever” not “what so ever”. The Ravens “found” not “fond”. “weak” not “week”. “Instead” not “insted”.

Finally, Bronco Talk is not going to put you in a “band”. You can't read or write let alone play an instrument.

  • broncoinva9986

looks like you have a case of the overreaction mondays. wow 6-1 go be a bears fan please already

All right already, we have heard you. You don't like Kyle Orton, so now we shouldn't have to hear from you again or at least until you come up with something new. I appreciate your opinion when you don't have to use insulting remarks to get your point accross. Having said that, you have said the same thing in every one of your comments. Not to be rude, ” We have you enough already” about your opinion of Kyle.

  • broncoinva9986

The thing that disappoints me the most is that we had 13 days to prepare for this game….that hurts to show up the way we did. Defense didn't get enough pressure on the quarterback today. The o line struggled against a really good pass rush. I have a feeling that Josh Mc Daniels will come up with a good game plan for next week against Pittsburgh….Kyle Orton is a good quarterback He may not be Tom Brady but he is a good quarterback… The haters have been waiting for this first loss for a while…so here have fun…

  • Katch22

    ??? Thats all I got……

  • broncoinva9986

  • http://broncotalk.net Kyle

Don't try to make yourself a martyr. You didn't break the rules there so you won't be banned. Just keep it clean and you can be critical. I was very disappointed by Orton today.

BUT — Orton played spectacularly when we were down in several fourth quarters this season. He was able to spread the field and has shown to have a good arm. I'm not nearly ready to fire this guy after one bad game.

  • vince_mairne

Dude, before you think about typing something else or making some other stupid comment you really need to get a dictionary.

Kyle can you get spell check put on here for this guy! Thanks!

  • http://broncomadness.com Garrett Barnes

I totally agree. Like I tweeted earlier today, we can't win if we only play conservatively. The Ravens took risks and that is why they won.

Oh my gosh you serious? You are not a true fan if that was not a joke, dude Kyle has us 6-1!

The bottom line is we got our butts handed to us in the trenches therefore it caused us to get our butts handed to us in the game. We were flat from the first play, and they were jacked up ready to go. I’m kind of glad we lost because now we have a little adversity and I want to see how the team and coaches respond.

    As always….GO BRONCOS!!!

  • Anonymous

I wasn’t able to watch the entire game today…only bits and pieces. From what I did see the Broncos didnt show up today and they got beat by a better team TODAY… That doesn’t mean the season is over, or Orton suddenly isnt as good as he’s been the past 6 weeks….its means this team is not perfect and they still can still IMPROVE, the season is not over.

For those that want to get off the ship now, go ahead … the Broncos dont need you .. they’ll be there on Monday playing the Steelers and I’ll be right with them.

I predicted the team would win the AFC West and was ridiculed by everyone at my cool-aid drunken prediction … from the start I thought we had a better TEAM than last year, today was a tough loss because we didnt show up to play and the more desperate team won.

We will make adjustments, McD isn’t use to losing and he makes sure we don’t lose 2 in a row, its ok to vent, but also look at the big picture.

Also don’t buy in the crap MileHighs sells, he’s a loser plain and simple … dont lower yourself to his level.

I’m not sure what Kerry has to say about the game because I wasn’t on the blog today until parts of the 2nd half but I’m sure it was something about how Orton is going to fall down to earth now …. YES Kerry I remember the bet as well and you are 2 wins away from getting rid of my here…. than again I’m 4 wins away from my original prediction of the Brocnos 10 wins and the playoffs…. sooo I’ll take that.

The Broncos will regroup and beat the Steelers, and then everyone will be back on the bandwagon…

  • Anonymous

Tough loss, they’ll rebound though and beat the Steelers.

  • shannonsharpe

As a ravens fan, i must say, it seems the broncos have benefited from playing there toughest game to this point, the pats, at home along with a really lucky play against the broncos. I would be surprised if this team would truly compete in a division like the afc north, honestly the ravens at 4-3 prooved they were better in every facet, and are currently 3-0 against the afc west this season, most likely will be 4-0 against the division when the seasons over, just wanted to hear some broncos fans thoughts, thanks, beat those steelers for us next week!
