Denver Broncos head coach Josh McDaniels has led his team to a 3-0 record. (Kyle Terada/US Presswire)

“From our first meeting I knew [Denver owner Pat] Bowlen made the right decision,” Denver receiver Brandon Stokley said after Sunday’s 23-3 victory in Oakland. “We’re lucky we have him. We’ve all bought into his plan.”

Stokley, of course, is referring to rookie head coach Josh McDaniels, and the 11th-year wide receiver isn’t alone his belief. Every player asked about Denver Broncos‘ head coach responds in near-perfect uniform:

We have someone special in Josh McDaniels.

It’s impossible to deny. After a tumultuous offseason full of personnel turnover and controversy, it’s clear McDaniels has this team heading in the right direction. And while winning heals all wounds, Broncos players were singing McDaniels’ praises before the the team’s hot 3-0 start.

“(W)hen I was talking to some coaches on this staff, guys who were much older and much more experienced than Coach McDaniels, they said, ‘Don’t listen,’” free agent acquisition Vonnie Holliday said when asked about the offseason controversy. “They said some good things were happening here. They said Coach McDaniels was special … it didn’t take me long to realize they were right. There’s something about Josh McDaniels.”

McDaniels, always a professional, didn’t pay attention to his doubters then, and isn’t about to rub it in their faces now.

“The people that we care about and their opinions are the ones in our building,” he said. “We know what we are doing. We feel comfortable and confident in our players, with who we drafted and what we’ve done. I’ve never wavered from it for one minute and we aren’t now.”

Perhaps most telling is Stokley’s original comment voicing his commitment to his head coach. Here’s a guy who has had the privilege of playing with some of the greatest NFL coaches of the past decade: Brian Billick, Tony Dungy, Mike Shanahan. These men have four Super Bowl rings between them — and Stokley says the Broncos are “lucky” to have Josh McDaniels.

Color me sold. While I’ll always question some of the moves this offseason, and I’ll always be a fan of Mike Shanahan, there’s no denying that McDaniels has, at the very least, shown he is qualified for the job. He’s going special places, and he’s taking the Broncos with him.

It’s very possible that the Broncos are looking at another decade of stability at head coach on the horizon. The Broncos are spoiled. And that’s fine by me.

Im on board… many including myself asked to wait until this guy coached a meaningful game before calling for his head. It has taken 3 weeks for the media to change their tune and hop on the McD bandwagon… Im pretty sure a couple months back bill williamson was questioning McD wondering if the broncos would even win 4 games this year. Now williamson and some other national media guys are singing a different tune. The defense is playing with heart and the offense is steady and balanced. Its only week 3 but so far so good…

  • dcbroncos

I had my doubts when he was first brought in, but figured I'd wait until the first few regular season games to come to any conclusions.

And, well, if I walked into a bar in Denver, and saw Kyle Orton, Brandon Marshall, Champ Bailey, Knowshon Moreno, Eddie Royal, Brandon Stokely, and Josh McDaniels sitting there, the first person whose autograph I'd ask for would be McDaniels. Or Brian Dawkins if he was there.

  • JZILLA

All I can say is how bout dem broncoz! We are off to the to best start since 2005. Last year doesn't count. The real test comes in the next two weeks as we got dem cowboys and patriots!

  • http://broncotalk.net Kyle

Hey I'm eating crow too… I predicted 5-11. Can't wait to see what the Broncos do against the tougher teams on the schedule over the next several weeks.

    GO BRONCOS!

hey guy. what diffrence three win make. I think we can beat some of these corny team next few week. this defence is no easy win you know what I saying. we need to score mor touchdown in red zone and it be like even more impessive team.

  • WhidbeyBronco

I predicted 9-7 which still might be accurate but the manner of our wins thus far has me in the crow on a plate line too… grinning like a loon! What a great start to what we expected to be a painful season!!

  • vince_mairne

Best offseason addition to the team…MIKE NOLAN! He has brought a simplified attacking defense to Denver which has dominated so far! Like other on here, I can't wait to see how we do against the more elite teams on our schedule!!! GO BRONCOS!!!

Oh yeah, how do we get our pics next to our comments? Help me please!

  • vince_mairne

    Never mind…I figured it out.

  • TheTroglodyte

People who couldn't see the personal moves the Broncos were making, as at the very least a step in the right direction, remind me a lot of the movie Mr. Baseball when the main character (Jack) couldn't believe he was getting traded because he was good several years ago.

Jack Eliot: I'm a World Series MVP!

Skip: That was four years ago, Jack. Last season, you hit .235.

Jack Eliot: LAST SEASON, I led this team in ninth-inning doubles in the month of August!

I wish I had copied all the MSM quotes about McD and the changes to paste them all in in comments fields today but I didn't. All along I had the orange colored glasses on. Mainly because I subscribed to the single theory that Bowlen is no idiot.
I sat through the Seahawks game in person telling myself that they were just “working out the kinks” and watched the Bears games as best I could. I even tried to convince myself that the Bengals game was a learning opportunity until the Immaculate Deflection.
I'm not saying that this team will not have its share of bumps in the road, but, McDaniels is LEGIT due to Bowlen's smarts and his will to win, and please let John Clayton know that as much as you possibly can.

  • Otis

Hey folks, congratulations! As a Kyle Orton fan since his rookie season, I can tell you that you have a solid, mature QB in the pocket….Kyle now has some things he never had in Chicago, namely a competent head coach and offensive coordinator!

I'm a Bears fan but rooting for the Broncos, go for it! Good luck vs. Dallas, they are full of puffery.

  • TD30isMVP

I'm not sold on the offense if we get behind, but the defense is getting stops when needed and the opposition is getting field goals instead of touchdowns. We will lose games this year, but for the most part this team is playing much better than expected regardless of the teams we have played.

  • kerry

um im not gonna say ive bought into McDaniels because i still think our offense is rather poor when it comes to red zone play. i mean come on, 4 straight running plays in the Red Zone on our first possession only to come away with no points?!?! bad calls and serious underutilization of our TE's in the Red Zone. is Eddie Royal still even on the team?? why is Orton not going to Royal?! HOWEVER i will give credit where its due and that credit goes to Mike Nolan and his defensive gameplans. BUT we will eventually run into a buzzsaw offense and we wont be able to play good offensive football from behind. like ive said countless times, Orton plays not to lose and isnt a QB who can bring his team back from a deficit with his sheer talent.

  • Andpark

Thanks for the insight kerry. Awesome stuff. Orton and McD are spreading the ball around for a balanced Offense, sorry we don't have Cutler who just locked on to Marshall every time. I think we are a much better team because of it.

D is completely dominant, Elvis Doooooom is killing it. Russel had 67 total yrds and 1 yrd in the second half. With a D like that Orton just needs to play smart and decent. I still want to see what he can do without that glove but his throws seemed a lot more confident this week.

Kerry I am not saying it was set in stone but we are 3-0, Orton is playing decent after all your BS. Post a pic of you in an Orton jersey and be proud of your Broncos.

  • TheTroglodyte

Every time Kerry says something I run to Vegas and make a bet on the opposite. I am making a lot of money this year. Keep winning me money Kerry.

  • kerry

my BS?? really? see ive been correct about Orton the whole way. ive repeatedly said he is a play not to lose QB and that he cant go downfield and ive been right the entire season thus far about Kyle Orton. what ive been wrong about is the defense. BUT we also have played a Browns team that hasnt scored an offensive TD in 8 games and a Raiders team who have a QB who couldnt complete a pass to save his life and then got a lucky bounce against Cincy. so yes while we are 3-0 we havent gone up against a top flite team either. so dont sit there and act like we are 3-0 against top teams like the Ravens, Giants and Vikings. we played the Bengals, Browns and Raiders.

  • TheTroglodyte

lol @ Kerry “we havent gone up against a top flite team either.”

You talk so much trash you don't even know what you say anymore. Just last week you wouldn't shut up about how if the Bears can beat the Steelers they can beat anyone. According to your logic that would make the Bengals a top flite team since they beat the Steelers.

  • NMBronc

I have always been on board about next year, but may be loving me some crow this year. I had guessed 4-5 wins; might have to change that to 7-8 this year. We're 3-0 against Ohio and Oakland, so I'm waiting to see how they do against the good teams coming up. The D is just so much better than I thought they would be at this point, regardless of who they've played.

Not on board with Orton as our QB, but…wait for it….he did play very well yesterday. Much better accuracy. And the way Mor-halter ran, it may not matter if he does stink it up occasionally.

Anything's possible, but I do not see this team collapsing or giving up.

  • Rob_Bronco

HUGE credit to Nolan and the Broncos D. They have been nothing short of stunning through the first three games this season. They haven't really faced any high powered offenses yet, but I'll take a 3-0 any time.

Kerry knows NOTHING about football, and all of his bs during the offseason proves it. Everyone knows that Orton isn't the 2nd coming. But he doesn't throw picks, hands the ball off well, and is a good quarterback in short down situations. Combine that with an incredibly sound running game that eats up the game clock (the Broncos had the ball for 36:15, Raiders 23:45), and suddenly the Broncos are 3-0 against teams they should have beat.

The Cowboys are going to put a ton of guys in the box to slow down the Broncos running game, and Orton is going to have to adjust to that. Marshall appears to be coming out of his shell this season, so expect to see him and Royal back in action next week, and it could be a 100+ yard game for one of them.

  • broncoinva9986

Its hard for me to really not feel good about this team. I understand that the schedule gets brutal yea I get that, but Josh Mcdaniels has developed an offense that evenly distributes the ball without turning it over. I was critical about the Knowshon pick and The Cutler trade….everybody was..I still think Knowshon has plenty of room to grow.

This Defense is amazing I have always been a fan of 3-4 yea we don't have a big tackle, but I think Thomas is doing a good job and we are playing like an excellent unit…This defense is drastically improved from last year, so I cannot see how certain ESPN and NFL Network hosts really keep dissing this team…Deon Sanders said do we really have to show this highlight…..Its amazing, but we are definately improved. I am enjoyin this season every bit of it…I think we will be 9-7 or 10-6 with an AFC West title….Rack em Im out

  • steeplebomb

I raised similar concerns about the redzone offense and the absence of Royal. However, people responded with what I thought were some good points. With the way our defense is playing, we've only been losing for around 5 minutes out of 180. Pretty ridiculous. In that situation, I understand why we aren't being as aggressive on offense as we could be. This game against Dallas will tell us more about this team than the last three games combined. I think Dallas is probably going to score more than the 5.3 points per game we've been averaging. Well get to see this offense under some pressure, and against a team weak against the pass no less. Expecting a big game out of Orton and our receiver core.
