Perhaps I’m biased (note: yes, I am), but I’ve always felt the Denver Broncos have a beautiful name. It’s lovely to spell and well-balanced and gracefully simple.

Over the past two seasons, it’s been ironic — no, disgraceful — to start writing the team’s name with a ‘D.’ The team hasn’t had one. Why should the name?

Times have changed.

In Sunday’s 12-7 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals, the enver Broncos:

  • Pitched a shutout through 59 minutes and 21 seconds.
  • Stifled Carson Palmer, one of the league’s best quarterbacks, who finished with 0 touchdowns and a 61.0 passer rating.
  • Held Bengals runners to 86 yards on 27 rushes, a 3.2 average.
  • Forced two turnovers, both interceptions, one that stopped a Bengals drive when they were at Denver’s 27 yard line and another that ended the game.
  • Tallied two sacks and a ton of pressures.
  • Allowed one big play, a catch by Chad Ochocinco of 34 yards, but were disciplined against big plays overall, mostly because they…
  • Found a leader on defense.  Brian Dawkins was everywhere and had eleven tackles.

In other words, they found their ‘D.’ At least for this week.

Now the Brncs just need to get their ‘O’ back.

  • robtink242`

Yeah a good way to find the Offense is to let the rookie get sum touches in the game. Run the ball consistently and effectively, get the ball to the OPEN man, and give the ball to our play makers in play making positions. I want you to believe Kyle Orton is responsible for those big hits on our receivers.

  • Candide

Still room for lots of improvement on the D. I wish 5 or 6 of those tackles from Dawkins were credited to DJ instead. He looked completely lost out there at times and was not filling any gaps that I could see. Too many tackles made 4-5 yards beyond the line while grabbing and falling back for an 8 yard gain.

DJ needs to watch some tape on that Packers/ Bears games to learn how to hit like real linebacker.

That 2nd rounder Alphonso Smith played fantastic!
    Orton: 1 Cutler:0

  • areferee

Anther gd jb Kyle. My thughts exactly. This may be a very lng seasn withut an “O”. Yu keep hitting the nail n the head. Great shrt stry. G Brncs! Hpe rtn can step it up this week. Gd jb defense.

  • milehigh

Brian Dawkins is a beast. He was allover the field.

  • OC Bronco

Maybe it’s just me but I’m not as down on our O or as high on our D.

Our O – Brand new scheme and probably the most complex in NFL. My expectations the first quarter/half of the season are very low as the learning process continues for everyone, McDaniels included. This really showed and did not surprise/disappoint me too much.

Our D – Unbelievable performance – until we really needed it. Yes our O killed us with the holding penalty and sack but Cinci marched right down when we really needed them to hold on. Nolan seemed to get conservative – ?!? and we didn’t get pressure on Palmer allowing him to pick us apart. Benson also had a huge run which would give them 2 big plays IMO.

All in all I am very happy despite the miracle. We were in position to win that game numerous times. And still would have had 25 seconds had the “Immaculate Deflection,” not occurred. I think Cinci is a good team and will surprise some people this year so to get a W on the road – Absofukinlutely!

  • OC Bronco

*Disclaimer – I do agree with article and the title despite my previous comments. I couldn’t be happier winning a game 12-7. Is it possible that we really have a “D?” It’s almost unbelievable but after only 1 game we have to be feeling pretty good! Hopefully Nolan realizes his mistakes on the final drive.

  • JRODZ

Very happy to get out of there with a W. The pressure was there – FINALLY – and we looked better than we have in years. As the defense continues to gel, good things should continue. Nolan went old-school and went to a “Not-So Prevent” on that last drive of theirs. Hopefully he will learn it prevents nothing and keeps blitzing & step on their throats next time.

  • http://mrherculesrockefeller.blogspot.com herc rock

Andra Davis was also pretty dominant.

Can anyone explain why Moreno was getting so many carries? Buck was the only effective RB yesterday, yet McD insisted on platooning the two and then tossing in the worthless Lamont Jordan into the mix late. I don’t understand sticking w/ the RBBC mentality when one of your C is completely ineffective.

  • http://broncotalk.net Kyle

areferee, that may be my favorite comment ever. *thumbs up*

  • Roy

This team still has a long way to go, but it was a good start to the McD era. We saw a couple of instances where we threw the ball downfield, Orton’s arm isn’t the strongest though. Perhaps he should throw it a second earlier to help that cause. Our playbook should open up more as the season goes along and coach starts to trust his players a little more.

The D played really well with the exception of that last drive. I think that had more to do with the playcalls though. If you put a four man rush against a ton of o-line, with a zone defense, Palmer will pick you apart all day. Had we kept to our scheme, it may have been different. It is a learning experience though, and hopefully that is something they take with them.

All in all I was excited as hell yesterday. The future looks like it can be really good for our team.

  • http://broncotalk.net Kyle

    Totally agree herc.

  • Andpark

Nolan did amazing and I am very excited about what I saw from the D. Nice to have D playing so well while we figure out what is going on with the O. McD did a great job and it will take a few weeks to iron out what we are doing. I think we need more Hillis, less Jordan and far less dropped passes and we’ll be fine.

Absolutely a great game. We all really needed that. Sure the catch was “lucky” but I’ll tell you what McD was coaching the whole time, kept his composure and Stokely played it perfect. Then when Cinn had another chance we were prepared again. McD is a smart coach for sure.

Orton I will give the benefit of having a brace and glove over his finger but he did not play well. Poor throws (the Imm Deflection was 7 yrds under thrown) not mobile at all and really poor vision. I say Brand week 5 but lets see what Orton does without the glove next week. I’ll be there for my first Broncos game ever!

    Stoked all around.

If you guys haven’t heard Dave Logan (Broncos play by play radio) you need to listen to this:

    http://a1135.g.akamai.net/f/1135/18227/1h/cchannel.download.akamai.com/18227/podcast/DENVER-CO/KOA2-IP/9-13-09%20Second%20Half%20Highlights.mp3

I don’t know why people want to keep sucking the air out of denver today. So what the offense went down faster than the titanic, I’ve listend to 3 sports shows that have just flat out said “lucky play… they’re not good”?

Excuse me sir, did you watch the game or just that one play? Remember how you said that this was going to be on the worst Defenses in the league? Did you miss the Tasmanian Devil wearing #20?

Lastly, I think if the defense can show this type of promise every week and the offense can take it’s head out of it’s ass, we can beat good teams.

  • slkdjfod

All I hear about is that Cinci shouldn’t have let this one get away and that this loss will haunt them and how they should’ve owned Denver. They didn’t though!! Where’s the love for our defense? They played AMAZING apart from that last drive. Yeah there was a little luck to our game winning TD, but at least we put ourselves in that position, that much wasn’t luck. I have yet to hear one thing about Denver’s defense, what the hell?

  • http://www.webmdreviews.com Robert

Nobody wants to be wrong. Since 99% of the people out their pegged Denver to get absolutely blown out in this game (including many so called Bronco’s fans on this board) they have to rationalize the win by saying it was luck.

Luck plays a part in every single game. A blown call in the 2nd quarter that causes a team to have to punt may have completely shifted the momentum of the game and the outcome. A dropped pass here, a completion there. One missed tackle, one broken tackle. It’s all a bunch of horse $|-|17

The fact is that we made more plays than the Bengals did. It’s that simple. We fought hard and we won. Obviously we have a lot of things that still need improvement but that doesn’t take one iota away from this win. Way to start the season Bronco’s. Keep working hard!

  • http://bandit Dan Myers

Sitting in the Sam’s Town Casino SportsBook for the opening of the 2009 season, I saw that the Denver ‘D’ was very agressive and made Carson Palmer uncomfortable, to where his passes were a little off and his receivers could not save some of the throws.
If Denver’s ‘D’ would not have gone ‘pre-vent’ in the last two minutes everyone would have talked just about the defense. Bengals tried to save the game but the gods had already marked one in the winners colum for Denver, hense the 87 TD and the place went crazy, some with money on Denver the others with money on Cin.

  • http://www.manchester-architects.com T-Money

Another Positive thing is that nobody got hurt. Staying healthy is KEY!

  • Vince_Marine

Great article Kyle. The defense was great and the offense needs some time to come around. With that being said here is something you can’t ignore. Orton went 17-of-28, and threw for 243 yards and a touchdown. His QB rating was 100.7, which was one of the best on Sunday. IMO, McDaniels likes Orton because he is out there to manage the game, and just give us a chance rather than lose the game. We may not see huge numbers from Orton, but if he can go without mistakes and give us a chance and the W, then I’m on board.

  • http://broncotalk.net Kyle

OMG T, your comment is so full of witty irony and LOLs. (see front page)

  • Steeplebomb

I’d much rather have the defense playing well early in the season and the offense with room for improvement than the other way around. Even though it was frustrating to watch at times, I think we’re going to get better each and every game.

Orton played better in the game than it looks on paper. A lot of his passes got dropped and we didn’t turn the ball over, which is huge.

I think I’ve watched the immaculate deflection about 20 times.

  • Andy

??? The offense was so pitiful that – well, we may as well enjoy this one win, there son’t be many more this season. Watching the defense was almost painful to think that if you could match it with a decent offense we might almost have a season this year. As it is, we’ll be lucky to win 5 more games before we retire to WATCH the post-season again.

  • http://www.webmdreviews.com Robert

    Good Pizza… Bad Andy!

  • roshon2411

First, the defense was awesome. Plenty of good things happened on that side of the ball. Alphonso Smith looked incredible and I’m so glad Gus Johnson announced the game. I watch all his games during March Madness, he is incredible. As for the “immaculate deflection”, just amazing. Up there with the Buffs Hail Mary. But how many excuses does Orton get? Everyone knows QB rating is a horrible stat. Sure, it was 100.7 but w/o the play it’s 75.7. The offense didn’t have a play in the redzone. Well, no excuses for poor performance next week with it being a home game againist the Browns D that looked similar to the Broncos D last year. I want to see some points. Defense won’t be able to hold teams to 7 points every game.

  • KMA

Hey let’s take it and move on, it was awesome, no one got hurt (on the field, SPENCER) And I totally agree, that the D needs to be ready to go week 1 and i think for the most part they were. If that happens, the offense will get up to speed the next two weeks at home against Cleveland and the following week a tougher test in Oakland (better D) before the real meat of the schedule gets going.
    GO BRONCOS!!

  • broncoNM

The defense kept us in the game… man, i never thought i would say that so soon. the two stats that jump out at me are holding them to under 100 yds rushing and 2 sacks. They let up on the last drive and gave up the TD but our D was on the field the entire game. Palmer and WRs did make some plays and cinn did drop a lot of passes but our defense made plays and held their ground for the majority of the game. Our offense should improve… they need to stay on the field longer and get some first downs to give this D a break. The defense still has some holes but they are much improved from last year. Pressure will do wonders for our secondary. Champ, Smith, Goodman and Dawkins are primed to make plays if we can get to the QB.

  • MikeY55

we got 3 sacks didn’t we ? the back to back of haggan and reid and andra davis had one earlier?
