NFL rosters must be trimmed to their final 53 by Saturday, which means 23 players will be getting visited by The Turk today and tomorrow. Here’s my stab at predicting the Denver Broncos final roster – leave yours in the comments!

Quarterback (3)
Kyle Orton
Chris Simms
Tom Brandstater
Cut: Ingle Martin

If Orton and Simms don’t get injured, Brandstater’s a practice squadder. Instead, not only do we need him, but we’d be foolish to risk putting him there as the other teams can see his potential just as well as we can.

Running Back (4)
Knowshon Moreno
Correll Buckhalter
Peyton Hillis
Darius Walker
Cut: LaMont Jordan, Marcus Thigpen

This one’s tricky, as Jordan was #2 on the depth chart and is obviously a “McDaniels guy.”

Wide Receiver (7)
Eddie Royal
Brandon Marshall
Brandon Stokley
Jabar Gaffney
Brandon Lloyd
Kenny McKinley
Chad Jackson
Cut: Nate Swift, Matthew Willis

I’m not a fan of Chad Jackson – he drops balls like a mofo, especially in camp. But he’s a solid special teamer too, and we’ve already shown we need depth at wideout.

Tight End (3)
Daniel Graham
Tony Sheffler
Richard Quinn
Cut: Marquez Branson

I actually think Quinn has a ton of potential after watching him in camp. He’s a project, but has the skill set to become a complete and ELITE tight end in this league, both blocking and receiving.

Offensive Line (8)
Ryan Clady
Ben Hamilton
Casey Wiegmann
Chris Kuper
Ryan Harris
Seth Olsen
Russ Hochstein
Tyler Polumbus
Cut: Kory Lichtensteiger, Brandon Gorin, Clint Oldenburg, Matt McChesney, Mitch Erickson

Lichtensteiger is the surprise cut. The 2008 4th rounder just hasn’t looked good, and being pigeonholed at C certainly isn’t the versatility McD says he’s looking for.

Defensive Line (7)
Ronald Fields
Kenny Peterson
Le Kevin Smith
Marcus Thomas
Ryan McBean
Carlton Powell
Chris Baker
Cut: Nic Clemons, Matthias Askew, Everette Pedescleaux

Chris Baker is the only undrafted rookie who makes the team on my roster.

Linebacker (9)
Elvis Dumervil
D.J. Williams
Andra Davis
Mario Haggan
Robert Ayers
Wesley Woodyard
Spencer Larsen
Darrell Reid
Jarvis Moss
Cut: Tim Crowder, Lee Robinson, Braxton Kelley

I see the Broncos keeping a lot of linebackers, as Mike Nolan likes to mix up his packages and these guys are among the core on special teams. It came between Tim Crowder and Jarvis Moss and Moss separated himself last night.

Defensive Backs (9)
Champ Bailey
Andre Goodman
Brian Dawkins
Renaldo Hill
Jack Williams
Alphonso Smith
David Bruton
Darcel McBath
Josh Barrett
Cut: Tony Carter, Rashod Moulton, D.J. Johnson, Antwain Spann, Vernon Fox, Josh Bell

This was the toughest call to make. It was a three-way toss-up between Vernon Fox, Josh Bell and Josh Barrett. Let’s hope Barrett gets healthy soon.

Specialists (3)
Matt Prater
Brett Kern
Lonnie Paxton

  • kerry

Barrett isnt gonna make it. and i dont see Carlton Powell making it either.

  • http://broncotalk.net Kyle

Powell didn’t help himself in preseason, but I liked what I saw in camp. I think he has a shot.

The Broncos might have to keep a 4th QB too, unless they put Orton/Simms on PUP. I’d guess they search the waiver wire for a Jeff Garcia type

This gives me 47 of the 53 spots. 6 spots open.

    Those close but not sure…
    (15)
    RB – Darius Walker
    WR – Brandon Lloyd
    WR – Chad Jackson
    C – Kory Lichtensteiger
    T – Brandon Gorin
    T – Tyler Polumbus
    T – Clint Oldenburg
    CB – Josh Bell
    S- Josh Barrett
    S – Vernon Fox
    OLB/DE- Jarvis Moss
    OLB/DE – Tim Crowder
    ILB – Lee Robinson
    DL – Carlton Powell
    DL – Nic Clemons

    To me defnite cuts are:(13)
    QB – Ingle Martin
    RB – Marcus Thomas
    WR – Nate Swift
    WR – Matthew Willis
    TE – Marquez Branson
    G – Matt McChesney
    G – Mitch Erickson
    DB – Antwain Spann
    CB – Rashod Moulton
    CB – Tony Carter
    LB – Braxton Kelley
    DL – Everette Pedescleaux
    DL – Matthias Askew

My Guess for the 6th open spots. Brandon Lloyd, Chad Jackson, Kory Lichtensteiger, Josh Barrett, Jarvis Moss, and Carlton Powell

  • the decider13

How was Lee Robinson in camp? He was one of the UDFAs that I was looking forward to seeing. I was actually surprised that he didn’t get drafted.

I think this is pretty accurate, although I could see Clemons over Powell and Jordan over Walker. Still probably pretty close.

Seven receivers is two too many. I guess with Marshall’s situation being up in the air you can make a case for keping 6, but 7? I’d rather have the depth on one of the lines.

Crowder and Moss are both gone. I think Lichtensteiger will say too, despite his performance game last night.

  • kerry

really alot of Shanahan guys are gonna be axed by tomorrow. i see Barrett, Powell, Crowder and Moss being gone. Moss’s performance against third stringers really equates to nothing. he couldnt do anything the last 2 years and hasnt done anything against the opposing starters. i think Lichty will be gone too.

  • roshon2411

I also think a lot of these guys on the fringe will be gone soon even if they make the team. I think Denver will be a big player in pickups of veteran cuts across the league.

  • Candide

Kyle has it right as far as I can see. Just don’t know about the McD ego factor. L. Jordan is his boy. But cutting him it might send a nice signal to the rest of the team that all of the NE bringovers aren’t locks.

  • http://www.webmdreviews.com Robert

With Barrett’s amazing speed for his size I would be surprised to see him cut. He is a decent special teams player and can be mixed in well to guard some of the freak TE’s. Remember how well he played Gonzo last year? It’s a shame he has not grown into his potential a little faster.

  • jay

I hope they dont cut lee Robinson because he has a lot of upside. I would rather cut Haggan than Robinson. Nate Swift also has more potential than Jackson. I’ll be disapointed if Crowder gets cut because he showed a lot of potential during his rookie year, they should have given him a chance to prove himself last season.

  • mnw

What’s the story on LeKevin Smith. We trade for him about three weeks ago, he makes his debut against Seattle. Has been missing from practice & games for two weeks with a description of “undisclosed”. I think there is a hidden story here! Anybody know?

  • http://broncotalk.net Kyle

kerry was right, Carlton Powell the first confirmed cut.

  • Jon Krause

Kory Lichtensteiger, and Nic Clemons I don’t think would be wise cuts.

  • Jon Krause

Boy I don’t know about Vernon Fox either.

  • Jack

LeKevin Smith has a torn meniscus- likely out 4-6 weeks (some of that time has already passed).

  • OC Bronco

I don’t even think Fox is on the bubble. He will be cut fo sho. Don’t see Chad Jackson making it and Jordan makes it if we keep 5 backs which I think is very unlikely yet possible.

  • http://mrherculesrockefeller.blogspot.com herc rock

Jackson was gone as soon as McD was hired.

  • http://broncotalk.net (dee)

My Boy J MOSS! Is going to make it, he played with alot of passion last night. Lee Robinson was cut.

  • Linmoo

    Lichtensteiger in, Polumbus out
    Fox in, Barrett out,
Le Kevin to the PUP, Powell out, Moss out, Crowder in, Clemens in, Askew in

  • http://broncotalk.net (dee)

    Linmoo

Sorry to disappoint you, but Askew and Lictensteiger have been cut.

  • kerry

yeah Moss played well. against the third string team.

  • kerry

wow ive got a couple right so far. Powell and Lichty.

  • http://broncotalk.net (dee)

    Kerry

If I’m right and Jarvis Moss makes the team I think that would trumph any of your previous predictions lol

What odds would you give me? 400-1?

  • http://broncotalk.net (dee)

Also maybe Crowder stays and Haggan is gone? That would be a reallly long shot though.

  • Linmoo

    just saw it. From DP:

Today, the team released center Kory Lichtensteiger, a fourth-round draft pick in 2008; defensive tackle Carlton Powell, a fifth-round pick in 2008; undrafted rookie linebacker Lee Robinson; running back Marcus Thomas; offensive lineman Clint Oldenburg; defensive end Matthias Askew; and quarterback Ingle Martin.

  • http://broncotalk.net Kyle

Haggan was with the captains during the coin toss last night, so that would be a huge surprise.

Of any of the vet LB’s I thought might get released, Darrell Reid stood out.

  • Vic G

I say pretty dam accurate I don’t know about Barrett though if he doesn’t make it fox will be in or they might put them in both because fox was doing good last nite and well Barrett was decent last year especially covering Tony Gonzalez and I say lamant Jordan will make it I belive because he’s a mcdanials guy from new England

  • DC

I don’t see what they see in Haggan.

  • http://birty.blogspot.com mikebirty

We agree on 50/53 Kyle – only differences on the one I posted to the “other blog” are I have
Jordan for Lloyd (which I kinda regret but its possible)
Clemons for Powell (well we know Carlton isn’t on)
Crowder for Moss (but both, one or none being kept wouldn’t surprise me)
