The Denver Broncos released their first depth chart of the 2009 season today, with several surprises.

  • Brandon Marshall is not listed as a starter, although this is only mildly surprising.
  • Knowshon Moreno is listed as the fourth tailback, while Ryan Torain is the fifth.
  • The fullback position is not even listed (Coach Josh McDaniels has said that the FB would not be on the field often).
  • Marcus Thomas is only listed at DE, although he’s been practicing extensively as the 2nd team NT.
  • Mario Haggan has shot up the depth chart at OLB, where I rarely saw him line up in camp, and is listed as a starter over Darrell Reid and Robert Ayers.
  • Neither Eddie Royal nor Kenny McKinley are listed at the returner spots, although both have seen plenty of work there.

The full depth chart is after the jump!

I think Hagan is a placeholder until Ayers gets up to speed. I’d like to be surprised otherwise. Also, Hillis will be an all-over utility guy who won’t fit in the traditional “first team”, although he’s going to line up all over the place.

  • Linmoo

In what crazy world is Lamont Jordan considered the “second string” running back?

  • Nisse

btw, im thinking of buying a nfl game pass, at nfl.com. becouse i live in sweden, and the cable companie only show the main stream games.
i really want to be able to se all bronco games, and not on some low quality stream.
anyone tried nfl game pass? anyone else not living in usa who found another way of watching games in good quility? are there any good other services that streams nfl games?
and how much will it cost? i know it says 239:99$, but isnt it halv price if you live in europe or something?

sorry about being off topic, didnt know where else to post.

  • T-Money

It’s all about competition. My coach put me as a second stringer all throughout camp and all it made me do was want to out play the kid above me to get the start. Then after camp my coach told me that I was clearly the starter but wanted me to keep pushing… It’s all about competition.

  • CJ

Im telling every madden fan out there DO NOT go and look at the broncos ratings! its embarrassing Matt Prater is listed at 58 overall! and Kyle orton is 74! it was horrific

  • Mac Miller

not exactly what i was hoping my Madden depth chart would look like but uh, hopefully this will be updated by the end of the preseason! I am so pumped for Moreno. and yes the madden ratings are pitiful! cant wait to boost some ratings in franchise mode! Thanks bronco talk guys you do a fantastic job, KEEP IT UP.

  • http://BroncoTalk.net Mr.East

    Nisse,

Field pass is.a little expensive. Try justin.tv during the regular season. Seach the game on the website and they’ll take you to a live stream. It’s not very dependable but it’s free and live.

  • robtink242

personally i think its all pre-cautous. Marshall, Ayres and Moreno will start at the begining of the season.

  • http://merlinofchaos.livejournal.com E. Halsey Miles

If Marshall is healthy enough to start at all. It’s been really, really quiet since he went off the field and that’s not a good thing. If there’s something wrong with the surgery on his hip he could miss the season. Remember, that hip dragged him down for a bunch of the season, or so he claims, so this has all the earmarks of something we really don’t want to see.

I’m awfully bummed about Torain being so low. I mean, Correll Buckhalter? C’mon.

  • Bronco D

This depth chart is about as useful as the New England injury report. They didn’t get two #1 draft picks to sit on the bench=they will be starting come the first game. I think Ayers will start across from Doom. Bring the season on!!!

  • Pete

I never understood why everyone was so high on Torain? Maybe it’s just me, but I never saw him as any sort of answer to the RB situation we had here. I know a lot of people are high on him, but why? He has never looked special to me. Hillis I saw as special, and Moreno I see as special. I’ve never seen anything even close to those two come out of Torain.

  • http://ttmt.com T-Money

Nisse~ Field pass is the way to go for quality. However you can use the following too:

    atdhe.net (best sports streaming)
    Justin.tv
goolge ‘my p2p’ and they’ll have it most of the time too.

  • Ryan

Does this mean that Torain isn’t making the team? That would be an absolute shame. Seems like the guy has ability, just hit with the injury bug. I say drop Jordan and go with Torain. My feeling is that if we cut Torain someone is definitely going to pick him up. If we cut Jordan, we could sit there for a while without a team… just me?

  • Jon Krause

OMW! No no! This makes everything much better with Marsh! Is McDan slap happy? Crazy! Backs are a little weird, and the WR’s are way messed up, but besides that looks pretty fine.

  • Ryan

Pete – Did you watch the first half of the Browns game last year? Torain was dominant. But you’re right, he hasn’t done enough for everyone to be high on him… then again, neither has Moreno.

  • Jon Krause

Umm I have a question? Brandon Marshall (yeah remember that guy) anyways, he ranked #9 On Madden10, so why if Madden, (which is really not all to off most often) if the #1 video game has him tied with #9 in thw whole NFL why do the Broncos have him as the #3 on there depth chart?

  • mr. me

Linmoo, in the wonderful fake land of princess make believe, Lamont Jordan is a second string back. IN FACT, last year in the wonderful land of princess make believe he scored 4 times!! Now if thats not good what is?

    (LOL *sad sigh)

  • http://myspace.com/paraleipsis jchase8410

marshall is injured and has a trial scheduled the same day as the san fran game. He more than likely won’t play in the game anyway. maybe that’s why he is listed as 2nd team.

  • kerry

Torain is 5th?? NO WAY!! he is the second coming of Terrell Davis! he cant possibly be 5th!!! his whole half of a quarter of football against a terrible run defense says he is the greatest since Terrell Davis!!! right everybody?!

    hows that for positivity?? PFFFFFTTTTT!!!

  • kerry

and the amazing freak of an athlete Barrett isnt at least second at the safety position?!?! WHAT THE F**K??!! he is Steve Atwater the second! he is such an amazing athlete and runs in a straight line really fast! he has to be starting!

  • kerry

and how could the super athletic, DT Marcus Thomas possibly be second behind Ryan McBean?!?! oh the humanity!! Thomas is such a great athlete and so amazing!! i mean he can do a backflip!! he is the best DT we have ever had!!

  • Jon Krause

kerry even if u r just a little weird those last three gave me a grin lol u r funny … but in a very odd way

(no abbusive comments intended hope thats not against the comment policy?)

  • Jon Krause

Tho I to think Torain is talented, and I was *at the Browns game (was my birthday) you have a little small good point, but he is good. But I have not problem with him proving it, he’s “done great” in camp, so shouldn’t be hard right?

  • kerry

well i was just trying to get a jump on how people were gonna react to this first depth chart. i figured i may as well beat some guys to the punch by proclaiming how absurd this entire list is.

i mean come on, Marcus Thomas can do a backflip!!! he HAS to be starting!! and Barrett runs real fast so he is ubber talented!!! i mean come on! how can McDaniels not see these amazing feats by these players! oh the humanity!

  • kerry

oh and did i forget to mention Richard Quinn? i mean he is an amazing TE! he caught less then ten passes last year but they were such great looking catches that he should be top of the depth chart! i mean come on McDaniels! get with the program!

  • kerry

oh and last but certainly not least, Chris Baker!! this guy is the savior of the D-line! i mean come on! iam so super cereal! this guy was undrafted then signed by us so he has to be great at the NT position! i mean McDaniels couldnt possibly sign sub par talent! no no no! nothing but hall of famers and pro bowlers for this team! the second Baker makes a tackle he goes into the ring of fame!! on the spot. afterall he is the savior of the D-line!

  • soxbigdog

I hope Chris Baker turns out to be savior.. cause otherwise.. that entire defensive front looks awful.. no matter which way to line them up

  • robtink242

Kerry please no undrafted remarks. yeah guys like Rod Smith, Antonio Peirce, Jeff Saturday, Kurt Warner yeah just to name a few. you never know the out come off guys atleast not before there first game. i dont want to be confused with the Orton supporters, he still sucks(had enough time to prove). so after Saturday’s game we can start remarks. in the spirit of fairness

  • DC

Don’t worry about Marshall’s health, he will lucky if he’s able to play the first 4 games. He’ll have plenty of time to recover when he’s suspended.

  • CJ

Its the first depth chart. So it doesnt mean that they are the starters. Some of those guys are low cuz of injuries. Some guys will go up and some down

  • dr.gonzo

game’s on Friday….1st depth chart of the year big deal, it’s bound to change before the 49er game and much more before week 1.

  • dr.gonzo

beat me to the punch CJ I posted mine right after you . thinking alike.

  • gobronx

Dam. Didn’t realize Kerry would be spreading his pessimistic rubbish anywhere but DPO. I think I’ll be leaving now… Can someone please revoke that crotchety ol’ bastards Bronco card?

  • bw53

    What is Kerry’s major malfunction.

  • http://birty.blogspot.com mikebirty

Nisse, Been using the NFL’s International Game Pass for four years now and I think its worth it. I use Justin TV and the like for the English Premier League but you can’t beat the high quality and pretty reliable feed on the game pass. I would recommend it highly. On the couple of occasions I’ve had to watch games over the “free” feeds in my opinion things like Justin.TV are worth what you pay for them.

  • http://broncotalk.net Kyle

Chad Jackson dropped more passes than anybody in camp (by FAR), and I’d be shocked if he makes the team. We’ll see how far being a former Patriot gets him.

  • David

Nisse, Get GamePass. It rocks. You can watch the games live, you can watch them the next morning, you can watch them during the week, you can analyze the games at your leisure and you can project it (which is what I do) and invite my buddies over. And you can watch 4 games at once, try doing that at a sports-bar.

I know the number doesn’t make the player, however I don’t appreciate the number distribution. Im sorry, but David Bruton better switch to number 38 by seasons start. That should be retired as far as I’m concerned. Tom Brandstater isn’t walking around in number 7. Unless hes the next Steve Atwater I don’t care to see it.

  • http://mrherculesrockefeller.blgospot.com herc rock

Tim Crowder is in serious trouble.

  • robtink242

herc rock crowders hands will be in the ground. along with darrel reid. yeah Bruton’s number will prolly change. as far as reciever goes marshall, royal, Stokley, gaffney, swift, and (????).

  • http://ttmt.com T-Money

All hail Kerry… The all powerful, all knowing, all wise, Bronco God.

  • gobronx

Nice comment Mac Miller! I said the same thing at a practice last week. The only difference between No. 30 and No. 7 is that Bowlen rushed to retire No. 7. Ever notice how no one wears No. 44 (my favorite when I played)? Or No. 18 (how the hell did Tripucka get retired)? I’ve heard that Bowlen doesn’t want to trivialize it and end up with another No. 18. But, what’s the holdup with retiring No. 30?!?!

  • gobronx

Kyle & Robink re: WR. That’s a bit sad to hear about Chad Jackson dropping so many balls. I was thinking he’d be a solid performer in the NFL someday – was such a stud at Florida!

I had figured you’d have 7 battling for 6 spots. But based on latest news, my guess is Marshall, Royal, Stokley, Gaffney, Brandon Lloyd (why do we all forget about this guy?), and McKinely.

  • kerry

    robtink:

all i was trying to do was get a head start before anyone else could come in declaring how amazing these guys were. but of course i was trying to add some humor to my posts.

but of course im totally serious about Marcus Thomas. he can do a backflip! A BACKFLIP!!! why this guy isnt a multi time pro bowler by now is beyond me. i mean come on, A BACKFLIP!!!!

  • Redd954

Watch out for Travis Shelton he is a speedster and a great kickreturn guy!

  • DC

Kerry, don’t you ever get tired of yourself? I sure get tired of you.

  • gobronx

Sounds like plenty of people are high on Shelton. I’m curious to see his speed in preseason games. Interesting to see that he’s cousins with Andra Smith on his mom’s side and cousins with Devin Hester on his dad’s side. That’s impressive pedigree.

  • http://mrherculesrockefeller.blogspot.com herc rock

Who cares if Bruton is wearing 30? Something like 4 people have worn it since TD retired. Christ, Mike Bell wore it.

  • robtink242

    lol @ gobronx
Maybe in the special teams area. i’m also pulling for nate swift to grow into our future slot machine.
