The Denver Broncos released their first depth chart of the 2009 season today, with several surprises.

  • Brandon Marshall is not listed as a starter, although this is only mildly surprising.
  • Knowshon Moreno is listed as the fourth tailback, while Ryan Torain is the fifth.
  • The fullback position is not even listed (Coach Josh McDaniels has said that the FB would not be on the field often).
  • Marcus Thomas is only listed at DE, although he’s been practicing extensively as the 2nd team NT.
  • Mario Haggan has shot up the depth chart at OLB, where I rarely saw him line up in camp, and is listed as a starter over Darrell Reid and Robert Ayers.
  • Neither Eddie Royal nor Kenny McKinley are listed at the returner spots, although both have seen plenty of work there.

The full depth chart is after the jump!

Yeah was a surprise to see Marshall there but McD said Gaffney was filling in for him.

  • Josh

This quote from McDaniels pretty much sums up what he thinks of the depth chart (Thanks to John Bena over at MHR):

“That is not our depth chart. We don’t have any starters right now. We have competition everywhere. The league mandates that we put out a roster for who is going to start in the first preseason game, and Brandon has a personal situation that he is going to attend to and won’t be able to make that first preseason game. (WR) Jabar Gaffney is going to start in his place. It is very simple. There is nothing other than that to that entire story.”

I’d say McD just filled in the blanks since the league told him he had to.

I think a lot of this has to do with the preseason game coming up, and a lot of this has to do with playing time. The coaches can now get an extended look @ Reid, Ayers and McKinley. McD knows what Chad Jackson can do, but nothing about Kenny. I personally think we found a future stud.

FB is no surprise at all, as Hillis is a lock for that position when we line in a two back set. I also think this is used as a motivational tool. It pushes the players who are not starting. McD knows exactly what he’s doing and I can’t wait for Friday!

Screw Super Bowls… backflips are sweet.

if we have a circus why aren’t on any fantasy commercials?

    east:

now you are talking!! backflips make the player! not actual talent. we should only draft guys who can do backflips because according to some here, that means Marcus Thomas is amazing. he is such an amazing athlete because he can do a backflip AND he can intercept a pass AND fumble it back to the other team all on the same play !! that takes TALENT!!
