Josh McDaniels and Jay Cutler tearing apart the Broncos. (Drew Litton, DrewLitton.com)
Josh McDaniels and Jay Cutler tearing apart the Broncos. (Drew Litton, DrewLitton.com)

There are plenty of conflicting reports out there – the latest, from John Czarnecki of FoxSports.com, indicates that Jay Cutler and his agent Bus Cook did indeed request a trade after Mike Shanahan was fired, long before any Matt Cassel trade talks began.

It’s frustrating as a fan because you develop an opinion based on what you believe to be true, only to have new information come out that can alter that opinion to a certain degree. It makes me wish I could get these four doofuses in a room, shove some magic truth serum down their throats/hook them up to a polygraph test/put them in a room with Jack Bauer and get some straight answers!

So there’s your hypothetical situation, Broncos fans. You can ask any one of these gentlemen – Cutler, McDaniels, Bowlen or Cook – one question, and you’re guaranteed to get a straight answer. One man. One question. What would you ask, and how would that help you develop an idea of what the Broncos should do from here?

Mine would be pretty simple. I’d ask Cutler, straight up, “Did you ever ask to be traded from the Broncos before the Cassel trade rumors were leaked?” I could draw my conclusions from there.

We want to hear from you Broncos fans! What question are you dying to ask, and to whom? Shoot them off in the comments.

josh mcdaniels needs to swallow his pride and get down on his knees and beg cutler to stay. if he won’t do that on his own, pat bowlan needs to force mcdaniels to fix the situation no matter what it takes. if neither of those situations work to get cutler back than i say bring back shanahan who they never should have fired in the first place

  • CJ

You guys are in fairy land thats never gonna happen this is the nfl. Jay Cutler wants out. This isnt like chad johnson hes a quarterback you cant force him to do anything. Hes gonna get traded likely. I want him back as much as the next denver fan but lifes a bitch!

I say lets get both of detroits first rounders!

Get Stafford and let him be the next brady
Go Cushing and satisfy our linebacker core
Depending on whos left at 20 just take the best guy on the board on defense

  • slkdjfod

State of the Franchise on NFL Total Access tonight stated that Cutler said he will be going to all the mandatory stuff and the Broncos have said that they are not going to trade him, this is all going to clear up, it was just a bad month…

  • Nicole

    Bronco fans,
Thanks for the update on the state of the franchise- I missed it watching college basketball! Look, here’s what needs to happen:
    1) You need a quarterback- Cutler
    2) You need a coach- Mcdaniels
Problem: They’re both young, hormone driven, and hard headed
Solution: DON’T PART WITH EITHER ONE!
Why: Everyone will lose in the end. It seems that the odds of finding a good qb is becoming more difficult than ever. McDaniels wants a patriot system: okay- the problem is that he hasn’t won anything and has shown his inexperience. TRUST ME HE’S LEARNING
Cutler wants to be the guy: okay-the problem is that he thinks that he has been lied to.

Solution: If you break them up, neither one will learn from their mistakes:
    1) Cutler will learn that temper tantrums don’t work anymore and he’ll work at resolving them
    2) Mcdaniels will learn that before I try something, I will make sure that I have covered myself completely and be prepared to expalin to the party later. What he wants to do can’t be accomplished until he starts winning.
    3) Denver: trying to force cutler/mcdaniels out of town won’t serve you either. Why? You will have to adjust to high end drama and show the ability to HANG TOUGH and keep it together!

An agents job is to create as much drama as possible-solution:
    1) THE BRONCOS HAVE TO CALL COOK’S BLUFF- HE CAN ONLY DO WHAT YOU ALLOW HIM TO DO
    2) Lay the law down about cutler/mcdaniels: NOBODY’S LEAVING
    3) let their showdown begin: NEITHER ONE WANTS TO LOSE SO THEY’LL COME OUT SWINGING.

YOU HAVE TO TURN THE TIDE DENVER AND HOLD ON TIGHT TO BOTH- WISHING FOR A TRADE TO DETROIT FOR DRAFT PICKS THAT YOU KNOW NOTHING ABOUT CAN BACKFIRE. YOU HAVE A NUCLEUS- MAKE THEM FIGHT IT OUT.

Cook knows that your front office is inexperienced and he will use it to his advantage. If you trade Cutler, one drama will end and another one will begin: THE SEARCH FOR ANOTHER QB THAT MAY ONCE AGAIN BE REPRESENTED BY COOK. IF YOU GIVE IN THIS TIME, HE’LL KNOW HE CAN DO IT AGAIN.

DENVER YOU CAN DO THIS! DON’T GIVE IN TO THE HIGH END DRAMA: KEEP YOUR QB AND COACH AND SHOW THE WORLD THAT THE BRONCOS CAN HANDLE ANYTHING THAT’S THROWN THEIR WAY!

  • 5280

I saw this in a mock draft blog from the Dog pounder(s). For what it’s worth… http://www.footballsfuture.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=309637

    ____________

    Trade:
Brady Quinn, Shaun Smith and 1st to Denver for Jay Cutler and 1st…..

    ___________

then I read this response to the idea
    ___________

I heard this today on sirius radio today, i wanted to call in so BAD, can you tell me why your willing to give them both players, imo thats way to much. this is just CRAZY!!!!!

quinn and our 1st for cutler and their 1st. thats the only way i make this deal

    ___________

So then I do a little investigation into Shaun Smith. He’s a DT that wasn’t drafted and has played for 6 different teams in his 7 year carrier.

Then I read this and laughed until I cried….

    ___________

On December 23, 2008, various media outlets reported that Quinn had a physical altercation with Smith in the Browns’ weight training room, and that Smith punched Quinn in the face. Quinn denied the reports, and coach Romeo Crennel refused to comment; however, Browns tight end Darnell Dinkins confirmed the fight during a radio interview on WQAL. Smith did not play in the following game because of a “coaches’ decision”.[1]

    __________

Hey, this idea is so “CRAZY” it just might work!

  • Nicole

    5280,
you’re right, it is crazy. Leave them where they are and concentrate on STANDING TALL and winning this battle. YOU HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY TO DO WHAT PEOPLE SAY YOU CAN’T : HAVE THE COACH AND THE PLAYER. DON’T GIVE THE MEDIA THE SATISFACTION OF SAYING YOU COULDN’T HANDLE IT!

  • RHINO

I love this website and I read it all the time but I never had the urge to comment untill now. I ‘ve become rather calice to this whole situation and had a “whatever” attitude and I think both parties are at fault. Something happend last night. While watching NFL net my six year old son said “I want Jay Cuttler as our QB”. I said “why”? He said “because he is good”. This has changed my thinking. I want him to have great memories has I did of Elway growing up. saying all that, here are my questions.
Josh: If my six year old son knows Jay is a good QB, why don’t you?
Jay: don’t you know that if you Man Up and play ball myself, my six year old son, and football fans across the nation will respect, admire, and love you more than ever? You will be a football God.

why aren’t more people talking about this quote (link from MHR) by bill belichick (http://www.boston.com/sports/football/patriots/articles/2009/03/20/belichick_adds_touch_of_spice/?page=2):

He didn’t deny that Denver made a last-minute overture about a three-way trade that league sources said would have netted the Patriots a first-round pick, but said the Broncos, or any other team, never presented a concrete trade offer that was better than the deal they made. “We pretty much had the deal done with Kansas City because there really wasn’t any interest,” said Belichick. “Some of the teams who said [we could do it] as part of a three-way trade and that kind of thing, I don’t want to get into the specifics, but believe me, those teams I personally had contact with 24 to 48 hours before the confirmation of Matt’s trade to Kansas City, and they said they had no interest in the player. [emphasis added by ssc]

maybe mcd isn’t lying and he really wasn’t pursuing the trade.

  • Stav

Whatever – I personally believe that they should make Cookler (that ungodly Player/Agent combo monster) stand the line, come to mandatories, MAKE HIM PLAY, and just ride the wave. As much as he’s cried, he’s still too much of a competitor to let his game go to s**t. He’ll rise to the challenge on the field. If not, if he/they make this an even worse situation:

Quinn (unproven/hasn’t done anything), Shaun Rogers (unhappy in Cleveland), and the Browns 2nd rd#36 pick for Cutler and our 2nd pick.

or 3-way, Quinn and the Jets #17 – You do that in a second. Starting QB familiar with the system, and the #12 and #17 for us on 2009? I’ll say it, if that happens, go with Moreno or Maclin at #12, and then go Defense at #17.

Just dreaming here, but I just want a decision to be brought down. I’m sick of this. He is or he isn’t our QB, pick one, its alot simpler than this is being made out to be. Before I was taking this all way too personal, I was going to cancel my NFL package, bombard the team with e-mails and voicemail. Screw this, I root for the Orange and Blue not the particular player who fills that jersey. I believe the reports that Cookler asked for a trade after Shanny was let go, I also believe McD was all hot and bothered to try and get Cassel. That’s all done with and this is yet again a business, you want to get paid Cookler? Go to the ProBowl again, get us in the playoffs this season, and you keep the ints at a max of 15 or atleast throw 28+ TDs. That’s worth re-negotiating his contract with 2yrs left. You want to win McD? Go get some s**t on your nose courtesy Cutler’s ass, time to eat crow. Stop wasting our time and point this team in a direction for this season, I think we’re owed atleast that.

  • Red

I miss Shanahan, I do, but Pat Bowlen would have Josh McDaniels as coach, so for the next couple of years he has the reins.
Now, moving forward, we need Bowlen to confront the media, confront Jay Cutler and tell him we respect your position, but we need a solid offensive leader of championship calibur; we need someone who is going to strive and step up through the pressure. From you, Jay, we need a 100% commitement or it is time for you to seek a new home.
My question to Pat Bowlen is ” Would you consider in a years time from now, as things aren’t going to mend any quicker, talking to Mike Shanahan about coming back to be the offensive cordinator.”

To Josh McDaniels I say ” Please understand the nature of this football organization: we will not tolerate a coach who doesn’t fully appreciate our city and history built around the Broncos; we will not be built to mirror the Patriots or any other team. We need the Orange Crush to rise once again to bring Super Bowl Championships. As far as dealing with your QB? Your in the house that John built-please, be respectable and do the best you can dealing with our QB to be, whomever it will be.
To Cutler ” There is nobody in this town that wants you to go. You’ve not done anything but stand up for yourself in the face of a difficult transition. What about the commaradarie between you and Brandon Marshall? Brandon Stokley? This offense was built around you-don’t forget that. We need a leader in the heat of Championship battle-a contender for World Champion. Can you be this for the Denver Broncos?”

    http://www.denverpost.com/broncos/ci_11936913

  • urway2hot2hold

Pat: Didn’t you fire Mike Shanahan because you want to win? Why did you ever let your new coach even talk about getting rid of your franchise and your best chance of winning?

  • Nicole

    T-Money,
I also read that link and it’s great. Mcdaniels has been signing people based on the “win now” concept. Well, you do want to win now and you do need a good qb under center (that schedule is a killer).

Q for Mcdaniels: How can you pitch with no solid qb?
How can you get out of this mess?

Q for Jay: Can you cool down in a month?
Are you willing to play for the guys?

Can they both find a common ground? Honestly, yes they can and that’s why denver is holding out. They need each other and that’s why Bowlen won’t give the word. They have to show that they can take the heat, fix it, and move forward. No one will win if he’s traded-it could take 5 years for another one to come along. Mcdaniels wants to win now so he needs Cutler to help him sell athletes now. Tell me what you think guys!

  • http://www.google.com T-Money: Link Ambassador

    Tom-

No matter where Jay goes hes and immediate upgrade. He has a very special talent it just hasn’t come 100% out yet, and he has trouble controlling it, but thats beside the point.

With Calvin Johnson and a good running back, he could make the Lions AT LEAST and 6-10 team. I think he’s that good.

  • http://broncotalk.net (dee)

After careful consideration, I think the best solution to this mess is to have everyone shut up… that means Bus , GMX, THE MEDIA, Pat, FANS, eveyone needs to be quiet…

Jay and Josh need to talk and sort this out over shots of Crown Royal..
Will this happen? No… but one can dream.

  • broncobobmeridian

Correct me if Im wrong but jay is scheduled to make about 1.3 million this year and Simms is going to make 3 million?

  • http://broncotalk.net Kyle

That’s his base pay. Cutler will make upwards of $10-15 mil next year with all the bonuses put into his contract. The Broncos wanted him to be the starting QB when he was drafted and built a contract around that premise.

“As a quarterback, that’s all you can ask for. I understand Jay’s feelings got hurt, but it’s too bad it has got to where it is. I wish Jay would have got some better advice from whoever he was getting advice from,”

  • NathanH

I say get rid of him at this point. I’ve lost all respect for the man.

WHY DO ALL YOU WANT HIM SO BAD, WHEN HE CLEARLY DOESN’T GIVE A SHIT ABOUT US?

  • http://myspace.com/paraleipsis jchase8410

    NathanH

I want him because he is the best option available at the most important position on the team. I want him because I respect that he wants his superiors (only in a business sense) to be straight forward with him, instead of playing these “maybe we’ll keep you around, maybe not” games. I want him because he will be a pro-bowl caliber QB for years to come, and will only get better with experience.

There are plenty of reasons to keep him around. The only reason I get from people not to keep him is he’s a “baby.” I have read that at least 400 times in the last month. The point is this…the pros far outweigh the cons when it comes to Cutler. This is not from a personal or business perspective, but from a player perspective.

Jay and Lil’ Mac are both just posturing, and sometimes when you posture up, you get punched in the mouth. Other times, the other party backs down. The thing is, whether McD believes it or not, the Broncos need Jay much more than he needs them. There are at least 10+ teams chomping at the bit to get their hands on Cutler, and he has a good shot at contending for a title with half of them.

If everybody else wants Jay, what does that say about McD’s ability to evaluate talent. He WANTED Matt Cassel…the only other team that wanted him was KC, where Pioli is the GM. New England people are the only ones in the league that wanted Cassel, pretty much everyone wants Cutler.

  • Nicole

    Jchase8410,
Thank you for beating me to the answer. We are fighting hard to keep Cutler because he’s your qb. He’s not fighting you- he’s fighting management. He wants the lock down because he wanted to stay a bronco, but it was Pat Bowlen’s job to get it done. You say that he whines too much. okay here’s a story for you:

The Cowboys (yeah I know but this is a real important point, hang on) were confronted about the isuue of a qb who was labeled: immature, hard to work with, mouthed off. So we chose: mature, did what was asked, and was quiet.
    The bad apple: Dan Marino
    The good apple: Gary Hogeboom
IT TOOK THE COWBOYS A DECADE AND SIX QB’S LATER TO CORRECT THE PROBELM. No one is willing to go to Invesco every weekend and watch supposed talent play (which you know nothing about) versus fighting to keep real talent. If you think that Jay doesn’t care, YOU ARE DEAD WRONG, HE’S FIGHTING TO LEAVE BECAUSE HE DOES CARE- HE WANTS TO GO WHERE THEY WILL SAY THOSE WORDS AND MEAN IT. Romo fought hard for a lockdown because he wanted to stay the cowboys qb and he was dead right for doing it. You are not in a position to start frOm scratch, there are too many veterans on this team and it will create a ripple effect on young talent. You won’t get anything in return for Cutler, your coach sold his free agents on winning now- that includes Cutler. I’ve sat through all those years of looking for the next big thing- you could be waiting a DECADE and that’s a long time. We learned a big lesson from that debacle and that’s what the fans in denver want to avoid. YOU WILL SINGLE HANDEDLY ALTER NOT ONLY YOUR FRANCHISE-BUT ANOTHER ONE. THIS GUY IS THE REAL DEAL-IT’S TIME TO THINK ABOUT TOMORROW BECAUSE FOCUSING ON ONLY TODAY CAN RUIN EVERYTHING THAT HAS BEEN ESTABLISHED. Sorry, I’m not willing to take that chance and apparently neither are the broncos since they’re holding on.

  • Tom9798

    T-Money . . . .

did some scanning . . . not coming up with reciprocol communication from the Broncos . . . .

The Bronco organization is being inundated with calls from all over the NFL . . . and are acutely aware of Jay Cutler’s value . . .

The gut feeling I have is that the Bronco’s are not happy with any of the trade deals that they have heard as such . . . .

Maybe this could change with a little honey . . . but I’m starting to think that there are no starting QB-Draft package deals that have appealed to them . . .

I feel that this will be clarified by Tuesday . . . The owner’s meeting in CA starts Sunday . . . and I think McD will speak on Tuesday . . .

One of two things will happen . . . . McD will say they are entertaining trade talk for Jay . . .

or The Bronco’s are not trading Jay . . . period . . . he is under contract for the next three years and is not going anywhere . . .

    I hope it is the latter . . .

    Win the AFC West . . . AFC Championship . . . win the Superbowl . . .
Jay will have a lifetime contract with more money than he or Bus Cook knows what to do with . . . .

As far as I a concerned, Jay is our QB until he actually gets traded. I am not going to entertain these “what if” scenarios, or possible 3-4 team deals. I am going to have faith in my Broncos and assume Jay is going to be behind center for the 09 season

  • Nicole

    Jchase8410,
I completely agree! If they’re goiing to unload it would have already been done-remember 6 qbs before we got it right. It is in their best interest to keep him. DON’T DO WHAT WE DID!

  • http://www.google.com T-Money: Link Ambassador

    Tom-

I agree. I think that if they really wanted to trade jay they would have by now. As each day goes on I have the growing sense that McD is going to stick true to his words 1. We are not going to trade JC 2. We would not trade him for draft picks.

As I’ve said before, there is an extremely steep price tag for Jay and I’m positive that the Broncos wouldn’t trade for anything less than 2 first round draft picks, one in the top 5, a second or third round pick, and a least one player, more than likely a QB. Otherwise it’s just shooting them selfs in the foot (again).

As it’s been reciprocated by just about everyone…It’s in Denver best interest to just keep jay. Give him a new deal if that’s what it takes.

What is that called when three people are all pointing guns at each other ? Broncho Stand-off .

  • http://broncotalk.net/2009/03/mcdaniels-wants-to-talk-to-cutler-before-trade/#comment-19243 Elway7_1987

I think that McDaniels needs to become a better coach. Cutler is a franchise quarterback that needs to be kept. I dont really know if im completely satisfied with McDaniels getting the job. Since he got the job there has been nothing but controversy. Bowlen also presumably told Cutler that they would not let go of the Offensive Coach. What did McDaniels do under the supervision of Bowlen. Let him go. Which really made Cutler mad. Why wouldnt it? I would be too if my coach told me everything would be alright and goes and stabs me in the back. Then they go and try to trade him. I can see why he is mad. I just hope that he can find some way to forgive them and move on and get ready for the next season.

  • broncobobmeridian

I think they will trade Jay if they get a QB and another quality player or 1rd pick. With over ten teams interested in trading for Jay one of thoses teams will offer the Broncos a deal that no team would pass up.

  • broncobobmeridian

Think about it. Say the broncos could get Anderson or Quinn and another top defensive player or 1 rd pick.

  • broncobobmeridian

Look at the timing of the lastest news about more than ten teams have called the broncos interseted in trading for Jay. That news came out on Friday 2 days before the Owners Meetings start on Sunday. The Broncos are starting the bidding war.

  • http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3983805 WhidbeyBronco

    wow, we’re really bored eh?
I actually think we fans are looking pretty good.
If we get market value… I sure hope we don’t!
But if we do, a couple 1st rounders would help.
I actually like Chris Simms. If he’s in shape… I’ll take him above Alexander & I’d take him over quinn too if it meant one less 1st.
The only name I’ve heard that I like at all… Romo. Talk about a guy getting no love. Like Jay, he breaks all the team single season records because of glaring faults on the o-line rather than our defense, they don’t go to the play-offs and the spoiled fans actually dog him. Did anybody notice him NOT running for his life last year?
    Still I prefer Jay.

Has anybody considered BTW; if we get two more 1st rounders or a Matt Lienert … how the hell do we pay them?
Jay’s a steal this year and whatever monies we do have leftover must be allocated to next years QB. Whoever that may be.
    Time to stand pat Broncos
Jay will play, winning will make everybody happy

No offense but there was about 5 minutes after Deion. I post the links because it’s about the broncos and more specifically about this Cutler deal. What he said was is dead on. Cutler needs to man up and lead his team. They put a “C” on his chest for a reason. Deion has always been the type of player I want to dislike, all about the money and showboating… but he backed it up. He’s right this time too. Jay needs to step up now. What face does he lose by showing up and working hard now? He “requested” a trade, he’s not a punk like Chad Johnson who put himself in an impossible situation. It’s pretty much accepted that our new management screwed up. Jay needs to take the advice he’s getting from everyone but his punk-ass agent!
His right not to but to what point? The money? Then say so Jay!
