NFL Network’s Adam Shefter finally stated that Jay Cutler is not on the trading block (I know many of you will only truly believe it if Schefter says it himself). Now CBS4’s Vic Lombardi is reporting that there is a scheduled sit down talk between Cutler and “high ranking officials of the organization” (i.e. Josh McDaniels). This meeting is scheduled sometime today, so the bronco nation will hold its breath while McDaniels and Brian Xanders explain. Denver fans can only hope that McDaniels will show some of his charisma that convinced Pat Bowlen to hand over the reigns.

UPDATE – Talks on between Broncos and Cutler on hold

Kudos to fellow ‘bronco maniac’ Sabo for noticing the new article. Vic Lombardi reports that Jay Cutler does not plan on meeting Denver officials “any time soon.” Lets hope Cutler can fit it into his busy offseason schedule to speak to his current bosses.

Not this subject but new signing from nfl.com:
The Denver Broncos and free-agent CB Andre Goodman agreed Sunday night on a five-year, $25 million contract that includes over $10 million in guaranteed money. Goodman is a seven-year NFL veteran who started all 16 regular-season games for the Miami Dolphins last season and had a team-high five interceptions.

YES!!! GIVE MCDUMBASS THE BOOT BOWLEN!!!

  • http://BroncoTalk.net Mr.East

McDaniels doesn’t deserve to be fired period. I hate this support of Jay Cutler’s me first mentality. He’s turning into the next Jeff George.

  • Anthony

I think this story has been blown way out of proportion. everybody relax, Jay will be our quarterback next year and will give us our first division championship. Remember ffor the past 6 years we’ve been hearing that the Eagles were shopping Donovan McNabb, and still nothing has ever happened. So everyone just chill and the fences will be mended and Cutler will go out next year with a chip on his shoulder and have something to prove to everyone.

  • http://broncotalk.net Joe

So Jay is not going anywhere…..Thats freakin’ awesome!!

  • CJ

Its great to hear Adam Schefter say that Jay Cutler isnt going anyway this offseason. I strongly disagree with the firing of josh believe it or not if hes not trading cutler. He has made an honest effort so far with the defense by signing some good players with a winning background

  • kerry

whats McDaniels gonna say?? “oh im sorry that we tried to trade you away because i have more faith in a Glorified backup then i do a Pro Bowl QB” well at least Cutler is going anywhere. for now. we all now know McDaniels has the perpencity to destroy the offense when there is nothing wrong with the offense to begin with.

  • broncoNM

We dont need to fire McD! That is a statement that does not need to be made. I do think that McD did learn a valuable lesson with this situation. These guys will meet up and this thing will be squashed in a couple of days. From most accounts coach McD didnt do anything wrong he just listened to offers. Jay had a right to get pissed imo. These 2 guys need to shake hands and start working on a championship. I think the bronco fans showed good support for Cutler and that might go a long way. A meeting needs to happen just to put this to rest. I dont think Cutler was ever on the trading block but its good to hear it from schefter just to speed up the process of getting this behind us.

  • Steve W

How many times does it have to be said. McDaniels did not try to trade away Jay Cutler. People need to quite acting as if he did. You are being manipulated by the media like stupid idiots. You should have listened to Shefter to start with and ignored all the other hoopla. Hopefully Jay has learned his lesson and will do the same.

  • http://broncomadness.com Garrett Barnes

I have calmed down and agree we shouldn’t fire him. What we do need to do is give him a final warning that action will be taken if he does something this stupid again. it is too early to fire him when he hasn’t even played a game.

  • NathanH

I think this whole thing was blown way out of proportion. Mr. East, I respectfully disagree with about Cutler. I don’t think there was any me first attitude, he could have reacted differently, but would any of us is my only thing. These atheletes are human just like the rest of us. Both sides messed up, but really it should have never even been broken in the media.

  • Sabo

Well, no matter what happened, Cutler feels slighted (and deservedly so). And this isn’t good:

    http://cbs4denver.com/broncos/broncos.cutler.nfl.2.946829.html

  • JP

yes…i hope this isnt true about Cutler refusing to take part in this meeting.

  • Paul

I am willing to give McDaniels a chance here in Denver, but I do not want to see Patriots II tried in Denver either. If he can not do it without bringing in retreads and hopefuls from the Patriots, what does that say about his coaching skills. Can he not teach his tactics and philosophies to people that were not originally indoctrinated into them. Can he not communicate his ideas and system to new people? Is a coach not a teacher? Is it not his job to sell it to the players he has inherited?

I will not support Patriots II. Have hated them for a very long time and do not want to see it in Denver. This is Denver, not Boston.

  • Brent

Agreed that this has been blown out of proportion. First, the media were yet again irresponsible – going to the public with rumors and not facts. I, just like nearly everyone else, experienced a wide range of emotions – most of which were not good. However, after listening and reading about the different reports and learning the details, it became clear to me that Denver did not try to trade Cutler, only that teams were actively interested in him and proposing different “what if” scenarios. Any team who doesn’t like their current QB situation would be crazy not to purse a talent such as Cutler. Second, as Bronco fans we have to step back and look at this objectively. If your in the Broncos front office and someone comes to you with a New Orleans Saints/Ditka trade deal of a few years ago (entire draft for 1 player) – you as an organization have to take it into consideration. I’m not saying that this is what happened, only that you would “listen” to offers weighted in your favor. Heck, I guarantee that Denver “entertained” many offers for my hero ELWAY but never pulled the trigger. My last point is this, I love Cutler – he has all the tools to be a star, however, I am concerned about some of his antics on the field – he lets other players, refs, and now the media get to him too easily. He needs to translate bad calls, plays, and unexpected turns on and off the field into a desire to get better. If he internalizes these challenges and gets better – good for him and good for us. If he can’t, we as fans may look back and wish we did pull the trigger on one of these possible trade scenarios.

  • http://broncotalk.net RVG10

I agree with Nathan H. (1st and last sentences). Xanders and McDaniels shouldn’t be fired, but the PR department should be revamped for letting this story leak. Oh and Sabo, never ever listen to anything Vic Lombardi writes or says.

  • Erik Roberts

Bronco and Cutler Fans which should be synonymous go to these web sites to show the organization and Jay how the fans feel. keepjayfiremcdaniels .com and savejaycutler.com

  • Vince_Marine

Cutler better stop crying and grow up. He wasn’t traded or shopped! Teams were asking the Broncos about him and we said NO!!! He needs to stop pouting and feeling sorry for himself. This is the same attitude he has on the field sometimes and it needs to stop. Maybe he is as mature as we all thought he was. He needs to sack up and get ready for the season instead of making a big deal out of nothing. Damn media!!!

  • champ2203

Steve W he did try to trade him and when it fell through everyone got wind of what he was trying to do. Xanders said they weren’t shopping him and if they asked Mc Daniels he’d say the same thing. So when asked the same questions Mc Daniels said he wouldn’t answer any questions. Doestn’t that sound a bit odd. I just watched Shefter on the Nfl network not more than an hour ago and he did say the broncos were involved in trade talks (INVOLVED not just approached). Mc Daniels is a dick.
thekidd0322 aim if anyone wants to talk about this without being on a message board. I’m curious to see who feels the same way.

  • T-Money

Here is a good video about this whole thing. Watch it!

    http://www.nfl.com/videos?videoId=09000d5d80efff33

  • T-Money

You have to let the fire die down a little bit. You can’t expect to surprise the one guy that you are buliding around with this bulls**t and expect him not to be upset. Yes, he is being immature. Yes, he’s an idot for not going to the meeting.

Give him a call. Leave him a big long message that explains how you messed up, but the situation got a little blown out of proportion and you would like to sit down with him and explain what’s GOING to happen.

  • http://keepjayfiremcdaniels.com/ StayJay6
  • T-Money

Who would you replace JMcD with?

That’s what i thought. You don’t have an answer. Fireing JMcD is not the right answer.

  • Sabo

Vince_Marine, even Schefter says that the Broncos considered making the deal. They didn’t just hang up the phone. According to T-Money’s video from NFL.com, the Broncos told the Bucs and the Lions that they would make a deal if one of those teams could ink a deal with the Pats for Cassel. Just not smart in my view. I think it shows that McD/Xanders got schooled in PR and personnel management this weekend, if nothing else.

  • Sabo

Firing McD is definitely not the right answer, I agree. But the kid has a lot to learn.

  • http://merlinofchaos.livejournal.com E. Halsey Miles

If we fire McDaniels Dennison gets a shot. That’s not so bad.

I probably wouldn’t fire McDaniels over this, but if I were Pat Bowlen I’d be effing furious right now. This is not how you want the team to be in the news right now.

  • broncobobmeridian

Culter needs to grow up and realize that the NFL is a cutthroat business. Bolen and the NEW management team can do what they feel is right for the team. I will say everything was handled poorly at the expense of Cutlers feelings,BUT thats why they make the big bucks…. Get Over IT…………

  • BroncoinVA9986

did anybody notice the LORD of the Rings marathon on TNT…..I have watched all three….HAHA

  • BroncoinVA9986

sorry just wanted to kill the negative vibe guys GO broncos

  • http://BroncoTalk.net Mr.East

Hahahaha BroncoinVA, I watched a bit of it…. not gonna lie.

  • BroncoinVA9986

it just looks so damn good in HD….I couldn’t help but mention it

  • Jason

    What is wrong with everyone?

    1. Did the reporter break the news to Jay? 1b. How damaging do you think the wording was when asked?
    2. Are his comments terribly shocking if this was the 1st he heard of the incident?
    3. The whole story is not out, never will be, most likely.

As someone commented in a previous post, and I agree, the mainstream media is FAR from reliable one could reasonably argue that the continued economical decline has been “helped along” by the media. -off topic but representative of my point-

I suggest boycotting sites like ESPN until they decide some truth might be important. I have.

If I want bronco news I’ll hit DenverBroncos.com here and NFL.com. No Yahoo! – no ESPN – no SI. I may browse the Denver Post’s headlines but I mostly avoid them as well.

  • Hansen

Could someone please get Jay C a tissue? He’s a bit emotional right now. I think there is some good that came out of this. Maybe Jay was struck with an overwhelming sense that he is not indespensible. Its like any business. Competition is good. Now I would be a bit nervous if in fact they traded him but you never know what is going on behind closed doors. And lets fact it, they could send out 8 midgets, 2 strippers with Horvil Tiki under center and if they won, WHO CARES! THEY WON. McDaniels is slowing putting his stamp on this team – give it some time.

I dont think Jay was a serious topic for a trade, but I do think Jay needs to grow up. It would be interesting to see how he responds though with some serious competition in training camp, this year or next. Maybe a nice fire under his butt would do him some good.

I am a Broncos fan. I want the team to win games and SBs. With or without names.

  • JRODZ

Let’s be honest. Cassell could hold Cutler’s jock. No one ever called McDaniels a genius, but this move shows his inexperience. Please remind him that he’s no longer a position coach or a Belicheck clone for that matter. He’s the head coach of the greatest team in the NFL. Time to act like it, and call your QB and give him a chance before reaching for your security blanket.

  • Chris

I agree with Jason. It is abotu time someone calls out the media. Jay- It is time you grow up and start acting like a leader of a NFL football team.

  • T-Money

    You want my two cents?

    Here you go…

    Two shiny pennies.

  • http://www.oneseason.com Jake

You cant really blame Cutler. Especially with “the Lions knocking on the door.” Detroit is a “QB-With-Potential to Bench-Riding-Has-Been” making machine. http://forums.rotoworld.com/index.php?showtopic=121290

  • Anthony33

Schefter did make it sound as if the Broncos would have done the deal if Detroit or Tampa could have pulled it off with New England.

Not exactly sure what to make of all this. My first inclination was, and still is, to think McD is out of his mind. However, you have to wonder about what he saw on film and perhaps came to the conclusion that it would take Cutler a year to learn a new system so why not go with someone who could shorten the process.

I am a Cutler fan, but thought his reaction was childish and inmature. Some of it undestandable yes, but seems like he talked to the press before he talked to anyone from the Broncos and apparently has still not talked to anyone from the organization. Weird, that’s about the only way to describe it.

Another thing has me curious, don’t you think it’s a bit odd that if Cutler needs to learn a whole new system you would think he would already be in Denver tyring to get a head start so he could actually help lead when it comes to the mini-camps? Don’t you get the feeling that a Brady, a Manning (either one), a Cassel or even a Matt Ryan would working their tail off to get ahead of the learning curve? Where’s Cutler…according to his agent he’s not in Denver and not planning to be there anytime soon. Maybe that’s why when Detroit and Tempa called, the Broncos listened. Just some food for thought.

  • T

Mr East normally I agree with most everything you write but, on this topic I disagree. I’m blaming this on McD and the media. You can’t tell me you wouldn’t be a little miffed if you heard about being relocated or fired from another source other than your employer. True or Rumor. Jay has all the talent to be a GREAT player. If you look back a lot of great players will have some sort of attitude about them.

  • Hansen

Excellent point Anthony33. If the new system is completely different he should be in Denver studying.

  • http://broncotalk.net Joe

Give it a couple of days. Jay will come to Denver, and all this shit will be worked out.

  • broncoNM

I think if Denver was that set on getting this trade done it would have happened. Detroit or Tampa i would assume would give up anything to get cutler and NE only got a 2nd rd pick for cassel. All parties i think would have been ready to go except for Denver. NE would have held off the trade with KC if they thought for a second there was even a shot of getting a better deal from Det or tampa. NE ovbiously figured out that denver backed off so NE eventually took the KC deal. Detroit and tampa would have offered way more than a 2nd round pick for cassel to eventually trade denver for cutler. I have to assume that denver flirted with the idea and then ended it. I think detroit or tampa would have jumped on this trade in a heart beat and NE would have gotten a much better deal for cassel. It had to have been Denver who eventually woke the F*** up and squashed the deal. I agree if McD/X even pondered this deal for more than a second they would have to plead temporary insanity. We know that NE front office are no idiots and they got the most they could for cassel. This makes me think that this deal was still in the early stages and denver pulled the plug before they got in to deep. The only problem is the story leaked. Dont think we should be questioning Jays work ethic yet. He doesnt have to be in denver to study film or workout. I do think that if McD hasnt contacted Cutler yet he better get on the horn. Im all for letting Cutler cool down but the longer he lets this go the more rumors and speculation will spread.

  • Illumin411

Those who think the Broncos weren’t actively seeking a trade for Cassell need to wake up. I’d be willing to bet a large sum of money that the Bucs and Lions didn’t call New York about Eli, Atlanta for Ryan, Dallas for Romo or New Orleans for Brees. The last time a young franchise Pro Bowl QB was traded was 42 years ago (Fran Tarkenton). Why would GM’s wake up on friday and all of the sudden think Jay Cutler was available. McD*****bag tried to trade the face of the franchise plain and simple.

That being said, Jay should suck it up and honor his contract. He’s being paid a lot of money to be coached by McD*****bag. I think my boss is a total slimeball and I still go to work everyday and do what he tells me and I get paid 1% of what Cutler gets paid. Cutler doesn’t have to like or respect his coaches. At this point, he probably won’t.

He doesn’t need to take a meeting. All he needs to do is call them, tell them he’s a professional and that he’ll honor his contract.

  • Illumin411

broncoNM, what you’re not considering is that Belicheat HATES his old assistants. He hates helping them in any way shape or form. Belicheat has also publicly said more than a few times that he likes lower picks because he feel he can get the same quality player but for much cheaper. Belicheat calls the shots in New England and believe it or not the KC deal made more sense for him than the Denver/T.B. deal.

  • Sabo

I’d like to agree with your take on it, broncoNM.

RVG10, thanks for the tip — given that this Vic’s is the most sensationalistic take on the matter so far, I’ve discounted it quite a bit. I wonder how many hits the CBS4 site has received in the past 48 hours?

  • Sabo

    Also, I agree 100% with JRODZ’s jock-holding comment.

  • broncoNM

1.) This has been stated before: GMs probably did approach the broncos and McD because of the know relationship between McD and Cassel. Of coarse teams like the lions and tampa would approach denver first because of the history between McD and cassel. Cassel is the best QB on the market and McD would probably be more inclined to take the bate because of their history. Their thinking was probably that the broncos would be more inclined than the NYG for eli or the NO Saints for brees. The broncos were approached because it was a rookie coach who publicly had a good working relationship with the best QB on the market. Im assuming McD thought about for a second or two and then thought better of it.
2.) I do think that some teams may have contacted the giants or saints or any other team with a decent QB but the info didnt get leaked. Trade talks happen all the time and teams do take shots for big name QBs. This story got leaked.
3.) Your saying that the pats passed up on a 1st rd draft pick because belichick prefers later picks? Or because he didnt want to help McD? I dont buy that for a second.

  • Alan

Been a Bronco fan for 30 years and I fly in to watch games still. If they even considered trading Cutler it would confirm my belief after they fired one of the best coaches the Broncos ever had, that the Broncos have lost their flipping lids.

  • JJ

Cassel for Cutler?! What a JOKE!!! I seriously question Josh McDaniels’ judgement if he even remotely considered trading Jay Cutler. And for all the Bronco’s fans who thought it was a good idea…you need a reality check! You had a few years with “ok” quarterbacks – Brian Greise and Jake Plummer – and you nearly ran them out of town! You need to appreciate the talent you have in that position and McDaniels better refocus his energy on the Defense!! Give the guy a defense and it will be an amazing team to watch! I don’t blame Cutler for being pissed. I’m pissed and not sure if I can root for a team run by a former cheating Patriot. Has anyone forgotten then were called CHEATERS just 2 years ago?? And this is the character Pat Bowlin has running the Broncos now?? ugh. I’m just not sure it’s worth paying thousands of dollars a year for season tickets to watch this guy screw up our team!

  • B

WTF!? McDaniels was off to a great start till this apparent disaster. I listen to a lot of Sirius NFL Radio and I agree with a caller that called in. If Cutler leaves then I may leave too! I’ve been a Bronco fan since I was a little kid 20-some years ago and this is the first time I have ever considered stepping away from the fandom of the Denver Broncos.
Cutler has a contract already. Cutler has more wins and a greater body of work. Cassel had an unexpectedly good year last year, but it’s also the first year he’s started since HIGH SCHOOL!!! Cutler is the most loved and solid franchise QB since Elway. Something the Bronco nation has cried for since he retired. Cutler is an inspiration to the world because of what he has gone through yet accomplised while having Diabetes! If you get rid of Cutler you could possibly risk dislike from outside the Bronco Nation, those who have diabetes and those who are just a fan because of what he’s done. He’s a leader, a winner, a hard worker and a good person (though you could easily misunderstand him).
Cutler, you have reason to be hurt or pissed, but lets suck it up, know that this is still a business, remember that McD. is only 32 and has only been a head coach for a month or two now. Yes, the execs. have made a mistake by not discussing this with Cutler first, but I’m sure they are not obligated, maybe so.
McDaniels, Xanders, Denver execs., I can see your reasoning having the New England connection, but are you F-in crazy?!! You get hired by one of the best owners in sports, then make a move like this? I sure hope Bowlen had no idea of this, if so, shame on you too! Remember, you guys are young too and are also a part of the building of the franchise. You have to prove yourself as well, and Cutler has already proven he is arguably a top 10 QB, you haven’t proven anything as of yet as a head coach, or a GM (I don’t know of your body of work, so if this is untrue, I appologize and stand corrected). You were handed a franchise QB who can be solid for the next decade! Do you think that Denver would have won those two Super Bowls when Shanny came to town if he had traded Elway? No, Cutler’s not Elway, but the point makes sense.
I can only speek for myself, but as a fan, at this point, because I know Cutler as a fan and enjoy watching his play, I would rather have Cutler for the next ten years with no idea how we will do then you guys and Cassel for the next ten years and a guranteed couple of playoff births. Think about it!
