    zone-blocking scheme gone!!! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

    its gone???

  • Richard

Nowhere did I hear anyone say goodbye to the zone blocking scheme. I have been perusing this site and the Pest, the Smooze, and broncos country, and I must say that I’ve never seen so much negativity as this. Relax folks. Take a prozac, Have a nice cold beer, roll a big one, or whatever you do to calm down. We are no worse off than we were at the final clock ticks in San Diego. Some people cannot handle change.

So the Kid is 32. He has 3 SB rings to Shanny’s two with the Broncs. (And yes I know he has one with SF)

THe Broncos are still 1/2 of a team. Josh has a very good nucleus on O which he will be able to exploit. The D is still pathetic, but lets face it. The powers that be cannot ignore the problem any longer, and can’t be placated by Shanny’s insistance that a change in coordinator will solve the problem.

Last year everyone was cursing Jim Bates and hoping that Bob Slowik would be an improvement( myself included with reservations)

Well Slowik Bombed at least as badly as he did with Green Bay and Cleveland, and ultimately cost Shanahan his job.

So what to do now? Unfortunately we need more than a restart with the same guys and yet another D coordinator. What is required is more like Cntl-Alt-Delete.

Well, a change to a 3-4 D is probably out of the question due to personnel. I can just see the look on Dewayne Robertsons face if they tell him he’s now a 3-4 nose tackle again. Think he might ask for a trade back to the Jets? Who plays DE? Moss can’t play period. Crowder is now a huge question mark. The D played better without DJ and Webster in the lineup, and Woodyard is definitely a player, but needs to be moved to strong safety. Boss is a waste of contract, and I don’t even want to comment on Niko. THe secondaryhas some young talent in Josh Bell’, Jack Williams and possibly Josh Barrett, but McCree is done and releasing Manual will be Automatic( sorry couldn’t help myself). Paymah is gone, but Champ and Bly will stay; you just can only do so much house cleaning in one year.

What will be most important will be to find talent in the draft which will most likely have 6-7 defensive players to 2-3 on the o side. A few inexpensive free agents will also help. The next challenge will be to find LEADERSHIP. Champ has it by example, and Spenser Larson and Woodyard seem to Have It. The leadership void is considerable and a HUGE factor in last years p*** poor D. We need to find accountable guys like Lynch and Dennis Smith, Vocal guys like Tommy Jackson and Al Wilson, and intense guys like Rubin Carter, Bill Romanowski and Rich Jackson. Passonless D is 28th rated D. We know that.

    So What about coaching?

Dom Capers is a 3-4 guy and would need 2 years to develop enough talent to compete. So not an option.

Mike Nolan. Has had success and mediocre years as a D coordinator. Can coach 4-3 or 3-4. Is he the next coming of Joe Collier? No but who is. Is he the next Greg Robinson, Jim Bates or Bob Slowik? No. Is he competent? Yes. Getting the D to say 20th next year should be viewed as success. Lets face it the Buddy Ryans(and son Rex) and other D geniuses aren’t going to be available this year, and after the release of Coyer, Shanny left the cupboard bare.

So go meditate, have a scotch, have a valium. We are not going to have a 3-13 season. We won’t be going to the superbowl, but it wouldn’t surprise me to see us as a wildcard at 10-6.

Am I advocating we aim for a 20th ranked D? Not at all. This last weeks games were a painful reminder to we few proud Bronco fans to aim for the best D the world has ever seen, the ’85 bears, the ’01 Ravens, The Steelers of the ’70s, the Vikings of the early ’70s, the Rams of the ’60s. It won’t happen in the 09 season, but when you’re in the basement there’s nowhere to go but up.

The Denver Post—Nolan is in as D-coach. I found this story on PFT, but here is the root link:

yahoo is reporting the same Roy.

The Denver Post article has changed a bit since last night — The title seemed to demand that he was the coach, while inside the article it seemed more like a loose assessment.

    Richard…

Don’t get ahead of yourself. This is a recreation of a team, although we all witnessed a “drooping” season there is a lot to consider and you brought up some good points.

Don’t forget that they are starting from scratch–they are presently occupied by the coach “combine” and a load of coaches are trying out.

We have had weak drafts and I think this is definitly an area that needs improvement. However, with this new cast and crew I would have to take the “we’ll see” attitude. I would like to give these folks the opportunity to show us their stuff…so to speak.

I don’t consider myself a know it all in the football department, I am a fan. However, if I can see the inconsistancies, I would hope the coaching staff would be aware if them also.

I am a non believer in predicting a season before it starts. I think this is a time atransition, if we think, as fans, it will be easier than the last five years, I am certain we will be proven wrong.

Don’t expect Superbowl contention on a full transition first season…but I think if it happened it would be great fun!

This is my first chance 2 comment on the Cutler situation, so here goes: Lived in Littleton for 20 years and am a huge fan, but letting Cutler get away was one of the stupidest things I have ever seen an NFL team do. Mcdaniels and Bowlen must be idiots to have let that happen. For,me…I will become a Chicago Bears fan now…..Just watch how long now the franchise will wallow in mediocrity because of this incredibility stupid decision
