we have to have a feature, 25-30 carry back. all these fragle backs have to be released. changing the RB over and over again during the game messes up rhythm of an offense. Hall, Young, Pittman, Bell should all be cut this offseason. im not gonna be sold on Torain at all until he shows he can stay healthy. he gets injured, then gets healthy and first game back he gets injured again. man Tim Hightower would be good for us right now. but we need a bruiser. a monster who can run after first contact.

yeah hall, young, pittman, torain, bell, and quick 6 should be on the bubble. I would go for a solid back in the first 3 rounds. along with hillis and two backs that are currently on my list to be on the bubble. Granted we dont find a stud through free agency.

In theory, Tatum Bell and Selvin Young are both excellent as a change of pace back if Hillis is the primary ball carrier.

I'm not convinced just seeing game film on Hillis will help the other team slow him down. I do think that he might suffer as an every down back because he doesn't have elite speed, so he will be one dimensional. Thus a change of pace back will be really important. But I remember reading that Jerome Bettis put up a most exceptional stat: 5 carries for a total of 1 yard, for a terrible-sounding .2 yards per carry. Except those 5 carries generated 18 points.

I see Hillis being capable of that, and having good hands and able to catch the ball out of the backfield, as a whole lot more. Maybe I'm optimistic here, but 129 yards against the Jets? Sure, this is the NFL and we have to wait and see if he can do it consistently, but I think he can be a big help, this season, because on offense the only thing we've truly missed is a power back.

What we have next season is anybody's guess. With all the injuries, who do you trust? I worry that Hillis is so valuable we'll overuse him and break him down, and I'm concerned about Torain's inability to stay on the field.

I actually wonder if he's able to be our "answer".
Now dont get me wrong, I LOVE what he's brought to the table so far. Love that we can use him all over the field and that he's versitile enough to be able to catch the ball and be a solid recieving threat. However, i really wonder once other teams get some game film on him how effective he will be as an every down back, not only for this season but moving forward, especially when you add to the fact that we really dont have that change of pace back to compliment him. I agree, i cant see Selvin sticking around next year, but keep in mind everyone, that we've not only got torrain coming back, but quick 6 as well. So, to me, the question becomes do we think 1.) they can be durable enough 2.) are they talented enough.. if you can answer yes to those then do we need to draft yet another RB? If you can answer yes to those then you can pair one or both of them with hillis for a solid 1,2 (and maybe 3) punch.

I dont know.. Im torn. As nice as it would be to have a top tier type of RB, is it necessary when we have so many holes on the D side of the ball? On top of that, Stokely isnt getting any younger so we may need to find a slot guy, AND as big as D.Grahahm's cap number is (possible cap cut in the future??), and as unhealthy as Tony is, we may need to look towards a TE in the future.
Hopefully Hillis can be "the guy" just hate having to draft no matter how low, runningbacks seemingly every year .. guess time will tell about hillis

I agree with Kerry - we need a full time back. Whether it's Hillis or someone else, we are at our best when we have an established running game that allows us to use the bootleg and the screen. But I would vote that we aggressively pursue an aggressive pass rusher. I HAAAATE that we can't put pressure on the QB. If you want to see what I'm talking about, watch the following teams: Giants, Steelers, Ravens, Cowboys. All are in the top 10 in sacks, with the Steelers leading the NFL with 42 sacks. The Broncos are ranked 21st with only 22 sacks in 12 games. And because we aren't putting pressure on the QB, we are allowing them all kinds of time to throw the ball, which is why we are 30th in the league in interceptions (5). The only team with fewer INTs is Detroit (Baltimore leads the league with 20).

I am pleading with Shanahan to beef up our defense. If we don't pressure the QB, we are always going to have to score 35 points a game to win. In other words, we'll become the Chargers.

Selvin Young and Andre Hall wont even be on the roster next year. too injury prone and too fumble prone. Shanahan has got to stop trying to turn bums into stars. it doesnt work. a new RB is needed in the draft. id say Ian Johnson from Boise State but he isnt built to be a 20-25 carry back in the NFL. Hillis maybe that guy. CJ Spiller from Clemson could be a good draft pick somewhere between rounds 3-5. if we werent so hard up for defense then a Beanie Wells or Knowshon Moreno would be a great first round RB pick. but there is also a pick that nobody is looking at right now and that is Rashad Jennings out of Liberty. 6'1, 232 pounds and projected to run a 4.6 forty. or Shonn Greene out of Iowa. 5'11, 235 pounds. projected 4.5 forty and through eight games this year he has had 100 yards or more in every game. he had 217 yards against Wisconsin.

I meant to mention in the article and I totally forgot last night, but he came in second in Football Outsider's DYAR for the week. Meaning that his 129 rushing yards were very high quality rushing yards.
