Super Eddie

Eddie Royal chewed up and spit out the Oakland Raiders secondary on a national stage. Now he’s being recognized for his efforts.

NFL and Denver Broncos fans have voted Royal as the Diet Pepsi NFL Rookie of the Week for Week One of the 2008 NFL season. Royal had nine catches for 146 yards and one touchdown in the Broncos’ 41-14 win over the Oakland Raiders on Monday Night Football. He also rushed for nine yards and returned three kicks for 30 yards to help secure the Broncos’ win.

QB Jay Cutler was also nominated for an award – the FedEx Air Player of the Week – but Eagles QB Donovan McNabb took home those honors.

Congrats to Eddie on his first NFL recognition! Leading the NFL in receiving yards for all wide receivers will do that for you. Full press release after the jump.

DENVER BRONCOS WR EDDIE ROYAL
VOTED WEEK 1 DIET PEPSI NFL ROOKIE OF THE WEEK

Winner Selected By Fan Vote on NFL.com and Via Sprint Wireless Service

Voters on NFL.com and via Sprint wireless service have made their choice. Wide receiver EDDIE ROYAL of the Denver Broncos is the DIET PEPSI NFL ROOKIE OF THE WEEK for games played on September 4-8, the NFL announced today.

Royal had nine catches for 146 yards and one touchdown in the Broncos’ 41-14 win over the Oakland Raiders on Monday Night Football. He also rushed for nine yards and returned three kicks for 30 yards to help secure the Broncos’ win.

Royal’s 146 receiving yards marked the sixth-highest total by a player making his NFL debut since 1960 and led the NFL for Kickoff Weekend. His receiving yardage was the third-highest single-game total by a rookie in Broncos history.

Royal’s 185 combined yards and 155 yards from scrimmage were the most in the AFC for Week 1. With nine receptions, the Virginia Tech University product set Broncos franchise single-game rookie records for most catches in a game as well as most catches in an NFL debut.

Royal was selected from among five finalists through fan votes on NFL.com/rookies and via Sprint wireless service. The other finalists were quarterback JOE FLACCO of the Baltimore Ravens, running back MATT FORTÉ of the Chicago Bears, running back CHRIS JOHNSON of the Tennessee Titans and quarterback MATT RYAN of the Atlanta Falcons.

After the regular season, five players will be nominated for Diet Pepsi NFL Rookie of the Year honors. Fans can vote for the winner on NFL.com/rookies and via Sprint wireless service throughout the month of January. The winner will be announced at a press conference at Super Bowl XLIII in Tampa Bay.

This is Pepsi’s seventh year as the official soft drink sponsor of the NFL and the fourth year that Diet Pepsi will present the NFL Rookie of the Week and NFL Rookie of the Year awards.

For the first 10 minutes after Eddie Royal was drafted I was like who is this guy but then when I read he was 185 but could bench 3 bills and on top of that runs a sub 4.4…. All i could think about was this guy opposite BMF (thats Brandon Marshal for those who dont know, of and bmf stands for Bad Mother.. well you get the point…) oh and ur right mike it is Eddie F’n Royal now, but for a good reason. And thats the only way we can refer to them as now…. Its gonna be a good season. GO BRONCOS!!!

We had really big debates about who was going to be picked before the draft on the Broncos website. I was gunning for him, but thought he would have lasted longer. Shanny was blasted for this pick, and I am sure the smile on his face couldn’t be bigger after week 1.

Congratulations to Eddie! This is a great honor! If he can keep up this kind of production after the scrutiny of opposing defenses, the Broncos offense will SING, and it will be a SYMPHONY. I am stoked.
