Eddie Royal

Pro Football Weekly reports that rookie WR Eddie Royal may be a dark horse to win the #2 spot behind Brandon Marshall:

…it largely was believed that Royal would contribute almost purely as a kick returner this season, but those views are beginning to change. Observers of the Broncos’ OTAs say Royal has been inconsistent at times, but his speed and ability to get in and out of breaks quickly have endeared him to the offensive coaching staff

Royal was drafted in the second round out of Virginia Tech. He was considered a reach by most, but if this information turns out to be right, the Broncos could’ve gotten a steal.

(Ed Note – This is hotwheelz’s first post on BroncoTalk. He’s trying out for a spot on our staff – let him know what you think in the comments!).

"if this information turns out to be right, the Broncos could’ve gotten a steal."

I'm not sure that a second round pick earning a starting job qualifies as a "steal." Second rounders *should* be starters.
  • 2nd round wide receivers are a flip of the coin. There's been 3-4 drafted in the 2nd round for the past four years. It seems like one per year seems to hit (Steve Smith, NYG; Greg Jennings, GB; Reggie Brown, PHI). The other two-three look like busts (Darius Watts was only four years ago, for crying out loud).

A rookie 2nd rounder starting? I'd call that a steal, especially for a team who has a lot of guys who *could* fill that role.
  • hmm.. could be interesting. I would rather see Jackson personally.

I really can't buy into the idea of a 2nd rounder being considered a "Reach", especially in the case of Royal? His reputation as an outstanding "Return" guy @ VT was well known, and he was a receiver as well. I can't imagine why Broncos would draft him, if they didnt really feel he had the capacity to "Get it done" as a dual threat. Maybe I missed something, but to me, Im hoping he passes the veterans, and makes the backups that much deeper. I think we may need a temporary #1 for at least 2-4 weeks?????

Darius Watts was considered a reach. I remember the Kipers of the world openly wondering at picking Watts so high. Colbert, Bernard Berrian, Sammy Parker, Jerricho Cotchery, Ernest Wilford. Were all available. Wilford until the fifth. DJ Hackett from CU, and Drew Carter happened to be drafted in the fith that year also.

The Broncos have had a terrible time drafting receivers since Shanny's arrival, so let's not reference previous Broncos drafts for what big busts receivers can be.

I honestly agree with you that Royal was a steal because he didn't have nearly the hype that Jackson did.
  • Never liked Watts, in 2004 or later. Reach or not, he was a 2nd round bust.

I don't think Royal is going to trump DJack, Colbert, and Parker (still think Parker has potential to surprise), even if he looks good in shorts. He'll be mostly a special teamer this year.

Couldnt agree more Kyle...in fact, I left a blog in the Darrell Jackson Bio as to my hopes for Parker. His speed is simply undeniable, and he's always been able to find seams against us, and showcase his incredible speed. He was a world class sprinter. I hope there's room for he/Aldridge, but having 2 world class speedsters might be a pipe dream. Especially 2 that can catch.

If Royal wins #2 (and Jay loves his hands) then our receiving core will go from a good 3 to a very good 4.

Marshall is going to get a slap on the wrist, maybe one game or two IF EVEN. You have to do steroids to get a four game suspension. Royal will probably not edge out Colbert or Jackson. However, if Royal does succeed then that would improve our receiving core greatly. Sammie Parker will struggle to make the team not the top 3 or 4.
    1 - B-Marsh
    2 - Colbert
    3 - D-Jack
    4 - Stokley
    5 - Royal

However, depending on Stokley's health Royal could surpass him. Royal is in a prime position to learn from the "Slot Machine."

Royal could be a surprise because he is from VTECH where Sean Glennon sucks so bad as well as a young Tyrod Taylor. With a great QB on his side he could surprise us all this year. Lets hope so.
  • You don't have to do steroids for a four game suspension, Person. Don't know where you got that information.

Steroids is an automatic 4-game suspension, it's just not the only way to get there.

I'm just saying you don't see too many NFL players getting suspenions for their DUI's. Just look at Marshawn Lynch.
  • yeah, but that just happened. Jared Allen was suspended last year for 4 games (then reduced to 2) for his DUIs.

Marshall has a lot on his plate.

I agree its a very shaky policy because you can look at Lofa Tatupu's DUI case which is under the radar compared to Brandon Marshall's case, and Tatupu seems to be in very little danger of a suspension. If he is given a suspension he may get a one gamer much like Deltha O'Neill and Odell Thurman. If Brandom Marshall receives anything over a one game suspension it is most likely due not only to his DUI but also for covering up his previous charge. The NFL needs a defined set of rules dealing with DUI's.
