Philip Rivers

It’s Smack Talk Week at BroncoTalk, celebrating the inefficiencies and inferior qualities of everything non-Broncos in the AFC West.

Just a quick reminder – this is all in the name of good, clean fun – no personal, individual attacks on each other and you can have at it in the comments.

Today I’m breaking down the San Diego Chargers, giving you five reasons – in no particular order – why they are pretty much the trash of the National Football League.  Enjoy!

Look at all the trophies – The Kansas City Chiefs, Oakland Raiders, and, more recently, the Denver Broncos all have a bit of bling to boast in their trophy cases.  The Lombardi Trophy is proudly displayed in each city, a mark of championship teams past, and proud symbol for each organization’s history.  For all the wins the San Diego Chargers have earned in the past few years, it means NOTHING – I repeat, NOTHING – compared to a hard-earned NFL Championship.

Shawne Merriman, Before and After

Tainted supplements my ass – Suspended for four games after a tainted supplement left you testing positive for steriods, eh Shawne Merriman? Last season, the photo comparison on the right gained notoriety, showing how athletic Merriman is without chemical enhancements. The results were noticed on the field too – the video has been taken down, but we showed the brutal block that Jaguars tiny RB Maurice Jones-Drew executed against Merriman that left his ass on the floor. Let’s see how well you do for a few seasons, “supplement” free, before we anoint you the next Lawrence Taylor.

UPDATE: Apparently the top photo was doctored (actually the body of Jamal Williams).  Still, just look at the neck (not photoshopped).  And the working YouTube can be found here.

Grouchy, grouchy, grouchy – Are there bigger crybabies in the NFL? Every time they lose, all you see are pictures like thisLadainian Tomlinson giving his quarterback an odd, frustrated look. Way to facilitate team unity, LDT. Even your own fans (see sig) are tired of your whiny antics.

A Team to Win Now – Time is running out, Chargers fans. Last year San Diego decided to keep Michael Turner on their roster, believing it was a team ready to “win now.” Well they didn’t. They were rumored to have declined a first round pick, and Turner is now elsewhere. Because they wanted to “win now.” Meanwhile, they overcompensated to pull off a trade for Chris Chambers last season the day of the trade deadline, giving up a 2nd round pick. Because they wanted to “win now.” Well, “now” is over, that season has gone and past, and the Chargers have to be left thinking that if they don’t make a run this season, their chance to win their first Lombardi trophy is likely over. They have an overrated QB, a getting-older RB coming off injury, and an offensive line that didn’t show enough consistency to make me believe they can get the job done.

In conclusion, winning a Super Bowl is tough enough… most teams most overcome injury, weather, bad luck, and, of course, the best opponents in the NFL to taste the Lombardi trophy. Unfortunately for the San Diego Chargers, most teams don’t have to overcome this as well:

Norv Turner. Enough said.

  • Danh

Man..I never realized that Merriman grew like that. I say that is an unfair advantage cause now all I can hear on TV is how great this guy is when he’s a juicer.

  • http://broncotalk.net Kyle

It’s just so extreme, the amount of weight and muscle mass he lost after his suspension. Crazy.

  • azbronco7

    awesome ending

  • azbronco7

Reason #6: no one wants to let them have a stadium in their town. Better get moving to LA again!

  • orangecrush74

    Don’t forget….Rivers is a tool!

  • kerry

overrated QB isnt even the word for it. phyllis rivers is nothing without LT. and both are coming off serious knee injuries. phyllis is the most overrated QB in the entire NFL. if Drew Brees was leading that team they would have already won the title by now. the team made Phyllis, not the other way around. Cutler beat Phyllis out in every QB statistic this year with an injured O-line and only one deep threat.

  • travis

I hate the Chargers as much as anyone, but that Merriman photo has been discredited… http://sports.aol.com/fanhouse/2007/11/19/body-in-2005-shawne-merriman-photo-was-jamal-williams/

  • ChargerFanforever

How many times did you guys blow it before you finally one it? 4 HAHA. KC won it when? 1970. The year Hadl led the West over the East in the AFL All-Star Game. What have they done lately? Oakland(unfortunately) is the only one that has any room to brag. Let’s talk about juiced. Didn’t Anderson just get suspended again for substance policy violation. Is that 2 or 3? One picture with and one picture without shoulder pads makes a difference too. I’m glad to know that you can read LT’s mind from just a look. Yeah it sucks to lose the guys we lost to free agency etc. but s@@t happens. Norv Turner is a better offensive coordinator than Head Coach. But watch the boys in blue step it up.

  • http://broncotalk.net Kyle

Thanks travis, I hadn’t seen that retraction.

Here’s a working YouTube of the MJD block:
    http://youtube.com/watch?v=PXeAG2VuBo0

  • http://broncotalk.net Kyle

Chargerfan – Oakland has a right to brag? Are you kidding me? I was in the womb when they last won a Super Bowl.

And the LT thing – come on – he was *itching and moaning all season on the sidelines, clear as day.

  • http://mrherculesrockefeller.blogspot.com hercules rockefeller

Ha ha, chargerfan. You’re awesome. Giving us hell for losing a few SB’s when your sorry-butt franchise has only been to one. One!

A guy that hasn’t played for us for three years got suspended? The horror!

Oh, and shoulder pads? You’re the greatest.

Enjoy rooting for the LA Chargers in 2010.

  • http://mrherculesrockefeller.blogspot.com hercules rockefeller

I’m pretty sure the neck is shopped too, one has ink, the other doesn’t

  • http://broncotalk.net Kyle

Merriman got the tat in 06, says something like “Finish it.”

  • http://mrherculesrockefeller.blogspot.com hercules rockefeller

    Ah, I see.

Nothing says class like neck tatoos.

  • Chargerbomb

You must not have been paying attention when Merriman was wreaking havoc last year, despite fewer pass-rush opportunities due to Cotrell’s system. The man is a rampaging beast and everything that Dumervil wishes he was, one embarrassing moment against MJD notwithstanding.

And about the Chargers window closing: They have one of the youngest teams in the league. Many of their stars, including Cromartie, Merriman, Rivers, Gates and McNiell, haven’t even hit their primes yet. Much like the Colts, the Chargers build through the draft, and AJ is one of the best in the league at drafting. Hoping that the Chargers window is closing don’t make it so.

  • kerry

yeah charger fans just look at how many Lombardi trophies we have compared to how many the Chargers have. ummm how many have the Chargers won? oh thats right ZERO!!!! and we have not only 2 SB wins, but back to back SB wins. all your talk about how young the team is and you guys still cant win it all.

  • http://www.broncomadness.com Garret Barnes

Personally I believe he is still on drugs just somehow covering it up. But Chargersfan lets face the facts, you guys have never been super bowl caliber.

Name me one player from the past that is remembered as one of the best that is a Charger. Maybe Junior Seau. Maybe.

  • http://mrherculesrockefeller.blogspot.com hercules rockefeller

The “best” RB in the league quit on his team.

You wont win dick with a whiny, little, AC Green loving, noodle arm having, pantywaist, girl as your starting QB.

  • Chargerbomb

For such a whiny little pantywaist girl, he sure seems to enjoy bending over the Broncos and having his way with them.

It’s good to see some of you guys dwelling on the past. Hopefully that’ll provide some solace when the Chargers wrap up the division again in early December.

  • http://broncotalk.net Kyle

Division championships are nothing more than bragging rights for losers. Who cares?

Super Bowl titles. It’s that or nothing. Once you’ve tasted that (and sadly you never will), everything else is inconsequential.

  • Richard

Better hope you get something accomplished this season. Your brilliant front office has put you in a BIG salary cap BIND after this season. Regardless of your youth, the team comes apart in ’09 and ’10. Then AJ can start drafting talented rookies to fill MAJOR holes. Ask the Chefs how well thats been working out for them.

  • Chargerbomb

Well then if Super Bowls are all that matters, it’s a good thing that the Chargers are widely considered to be contenders this year. I think this is the year they put it together.

Last year I remember reading on here that the Broncos were gonna win the Super Bowl.

How’d these predictions work out for you, Kyle?

I’ll give you credit, #3 was a solid prediction.

  • http://broncotalk.net Kyle

Ah, what a post! A classic! At least I had the cajones to put it all out there. :)

In the end though, it doesn’t matter. 13-3 and no Super Bowl feels a helluva lot like 7-9 and no Super Bowl. It’s the same amount of heartbreak, one’s just spread across a season in bits while the other is just an intense wave at the end.

  • Trent

When was the last time that ANY prediction was spot on the money? You can not tell me that someone can look at Schedule and tell me what you think, only have it play out in the fall. You cant. Last year the Chargers were predicted to go 12-4 and the Broncos 13-3 (on average) neither of which happened. So if you are going to give a reason that the chargers are going to be contenders the back it up with ligament reasoning.

Charger fans can just stop now. Your team CHOKES EVERY YEAR IT MAKES THE PLAYOFFS. I won’t consider that team a Super Bowl contender until they actually make an appearance.

  • http://broncos-denver-broncos.blogspot.com/ Ian Henson

A nice little backslap/pat on the top of the head to the Chargers. It’s refreshing to see some intelligent trash talking. Not full of YOU SUCKS! I’ve lived in NY for almost ten years, endured Red Sox fans, YANKEE fans, Patriots and Jets fans. I can say that there are not more annoying fans than San Diego Charger fans. “FEEL THE CHARGE,” they might as well be Oakland, because you can have as many LDT, Merriman’s and Rivers as you like, which one is getting them to the Superbowl? Winning 27 games in the last two seasons and still no Superbowl? Really? If you like winning so much, you should try to do it in the playoffs… It feels incredible, trust us.

  • ChargerFanforever

Yeah, you guys got 2 but remember you were given them after Elway whined and said he was going to retire. Anderson was suspended when he ppayed for you as well. A few notable Chargers – Alworth, Hadl, Winslow, Fouts, Faison, Joiner, Benirschke, Brooks, Muncie to name a few. Hey Trent, SD has made an appearance in 1995. Yeah we lost 49-26 to SF but what was your score against them. You guys won against a team who average age was Social Security recipients. Get over yourselves, its been 10 years. What have you done lately – nothing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • http://broncotalk.net Kyle

Actually we’ve done as much as you in the last three seasons. An AFC Championship berth and nothing else.

    “!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”

  • Sam

“Yeah, you guys got 2 but remember you were given them after Elway whined and said he was going to retire. ” Elway’s whining is what got us the Lombaris?! If it only took whining you guys should have won the last three years hands down.
Also, was that list of ex-chargers a list of your “greats” that didn’t win a Super Bowl? And, the only reason we won was because it was a bunch of SSI recipients, please! How many teams have won back to back, and against GreenBay we were the under dogs.

  • Trent

The bottom line is that you don’t have any more bragging rights then we do (excluding the super bowl department).

  • DesertBoltFan

Well it is apparent that emotions run high for both Charger and Bronco fans. I just want to say yes we have not won a Super Bowl and who knows maybe never will. But that doesn’t deminish the fact that the Chargers are one of the top teams in the AFC. The Broncos are also a very good team and had Cutler had some more experience they very well would have challenged for the division last year. I know Rivers will not get any respect here and that is understood so no need to defend him, he has been a winner at every level and no doubt will be in San Diego. He is our guy as Cutler is yours and Manning is Indy’s and Brady is NE’s and so on. All of your comments about LT’s whinning last year are a little exaggerated and it came from more frustration early on in the year do to the terrible start they had to a year where they were picked to go all the way and unfortunately the team read the clips and forgot to play the games. There was only one team better the last two months of the season and I honestly believe had the Chargers been healthy the Pats were ripe for picking. But the facts are we didn’t get it done. This is a new year for every team, and both our clubs feel like a Super Bowl is within reach. You all should be very proud of your team and it’s history. But don’t disrepect us for being Charger fans afterall we all chose our teams to root for years ago and as true fans we will stick with them good or bad.

  • Snip

If the Chargers suck, then what does that make the Broncos when the Bolts swept them 64-6????

  • broncfanstuckinsd

The bottom line chargerfanforever is the Broncos have TWO rings and the bolts have zero. Claim Elway whined all you want but it does look so good when the entire country saw your lame QB and star rb cry like little girls after NE came in and erased an 8 point lead in the 4th qtr and won the game in your back yard. Plus Denver has been to as many AFC title game in the past 3 years as the dolts. So try and talk smack but why dont you clowns actually win a Super Bowl first

  • DesertBoltFan

We’re trying brother, just as you are. It’s amazing when I read about that NE game and LT reaction to it from other fans. What LT did was no different then any player that feels his team and teammates are being disrespected by an opponent.
What happened a few years back when TO stood on the star at Dallas and did his BS? Are you going to tell us that no one on the Broncos would have gone after another player if they had just lost a tough game at home and the team danced and mocked your Terrell Davis salute or whatever it is you guys do? It’s really time to stop acting as if the Broncos and their fans are above such things. I have been to games at Mile High and other cities and Denvers fans were by far the worst. I sat there in 1995, and heard the crowd roar when Elway had the Broncos up on us, they were calling him the best QB in history and giving me tons of shit. But when he was picked off and the Chargers came back and tied it they were booing Elway and cursing him (the whole stadium). Then in typical Elway fashion he lead them to a game winning FG, and the love started all over again. You guys are no better or worse then anyone else and neither is your team. Stop trying to prove otherwise.

  • broncfanstuckinsd

Well for one until recently the Charger fans at the Q were non-existent. But the whining Rivers and LT did was because Banta-Caid was doing Merriodman lights out dance. Hmmm isnt it strange you say the Bronco fans would do the same. Well Merriodman should have thought about that before doing that stupid dance all the time that season. Class beget class. Plus it also makes your team look like a bunch of poor losers. I lost a little respect for LT. But you cant say anything about Bronco fans booing Elway. If I remember correctly the fans here in this fair weather sports town were KILLING LT after he could not go in the AFC title game. Calling him selfish among other things. Remember this your team would be nowhere with out LT. Again the Charger fans are the worst fans in the AFC

  • DesertBoltFan

I can say the Denver fans were booing Elway and I will say it because it was true. They put up his picture on the stadium screen as he walked off the field after a bad series and they booed. You tell me.
I don’t speak for the Chargers fans, but I can speak for myself. I have had season tickets since 1987 and took them over from my grandfather who died that year and who had season ticket since they moved from LA in 1960. I was there to witness good times and plenty of bad ones, but was always there. We have some F’ed up fans but you are living in a fanatasyland if you think it is only in San Diego that they exist, and you Bronco fans are above it trust me you aren’t Just witnessing the immature discourse on here proves that to me and to you.
I think LT will survive not having your respect, but it is obvious you have never played in a game like that and had to endure the pain of not reaching your goal and then have it compounded by the stupidity of your opponent on your field.
I invite you to come as my guest to a Chargers Broncos game in San Diego and I’ll introduce you to 30 or 40 of the best, most knowledgeable, and friendly Charger fans you could ever hope to know. We tailgate near M4 under the trolley bridge, look for the Bolt Bunker banner and come in and ask for Todd. Don’t worry you’ll be fine, bring some friends if you feel more comfortable.I guarantee you will change your mind about Chargers fans, at least the ones you meet.
You can also get an idea by visiting our website boltbunker.com most of those members attend the games. Ask Studbucket from here he is a Bronco fan that has been a member of our site for a couple years, good guy.

  • broncofanstuckinsd

Oh I am sure LT will be fine without my 100% respect. I am fine with that. He is a classy guy and that just made me sad. I will take you up on your offer. I generally dont have problem with the smart intelligent Charger fans. Its the wagon riders who all of a sudden know everything and are belligerent. In 1997 I went to the Bronco/Charger game. had a great time. Granted the Chargers were awful but the people around us were cool, we were able to talk smack and go back and forth. I also went to a game in 1993 against Houston. Off course I was rooting for the Oilers because SD was the defending AFC West champs and I was in the gold club seats (i think thats what they are called) and the fans were brutal. It was the last time I took my son to a game. I was getting cursed at, and my son was 5 at the time was hurt that his pops was talk to the way I was. It didnt bother me at all. As for being above it, I have not seen a game in Denver since 1992 so I will not try and speak for Bronco fans. But every time I went to Bronco games at Mile Hi I never saw any bad people. They were always nice and respectful. Even to the Raider fans. But raider fans back in the 80’s were no the thugs they are now.

But thats cool you have kept your seat since 1960. I do respect the true Charger fans the ones who were elated in 1994 and the ones that kept going in 2000 when they went 1-15

  • broncfanstuckinsd

Well, I will have to take you up on your offer. Its the true respectfull Charger fans that dont bother me, but it seems to me these are harder to find anymore. The majority are the band wagon riders I have been seeing since 2004. I respect the ones who were going to games and loving the Chargers even in the 1-15 season in 2000.
You are porbably right LT wont lose any sleep that I lost respect for him. But its a valid point..
Also I will tell you I am not from the new school of fandom. I dont my team, even though thats a right. Just like if I was Padre fan I would not have Booed Hoffman. I believe a player that has given everything to an organization is worth more respect than that. But we are in a different time, where dissatisfaction and hatred are so evident. I think the disconnect is between the fans and players are almost based on salary

  • DesertBoltFan

I hope you do take me up on that offer. I appreciate all that you said and I agree. I’m no angel and yes I’m sure there were times out of pure frustration I have booed or bad mouthed a great player from a team I support, although I can assure you it was very rare. Who can stop bandwagon Aholes from latching on a team? Denver was not always the great team they were the last 10 years and I’m old enough to have seen Mile High less then full before. Fact is winning attracts fans good and bad.
Keep in mind and you being a Bronco fan and living in San Diego can atest to it that we have fans from every team living in the area unlike Denver where you always have a majority of Bronco fans in attendence, and I have had my share of altercations at the games with them.
It seems to me you care about respect both for your team and from other fans, I do as well. But it would be more realalistic and more convincing if I came on here and had some good adult football talk and not have to see and read about players on my team that are totally false and hateful. The picture of Sloth depicting Rivers and the subsquent rediculus comments that followed shows that that respect you and I want is hard to find, even in here with your fans.
I have read all the “Five reasons so and so sucks” threads, is that the respect you are mentioning?
Go to my website, and if you can find a thread that is anyway near what Kyle likes to post then let me know and I’ll shut up.
    boltbunker.com
Thanks for the comments, hope to see you at the game. Remember, we are all just men and fans and love our teams. Take that out of the pot and we all would probably be great friends, like to fish and hunt, play ball, have a few beers, laugh, chase the women, ski , surf, play poker, whatever. Instead we all have to hate one another and the others team, it’s pretty stupid really.

  • LightsoutSD

Six points in two games…….and we suck???? That whole read sounded like nothing but bitterness. Let me ask you guys a question. Why are you so bitter towards a team that has never won it all?

  • goober

hahaha yall are gay. youre just jealous. chargers are the best and your not. the only reason yall won last week was cuz of that ref. and we didnt have Lights Out Merriman (who isnt on the roids)

  • Joe

So for what i hear here we all think that Merriman is the only juicer out there? the Whole NFL is composed of juicer. compare ave weight of linebackers in the 70s to ur ave linebacker now.. surprise?

  • http://yahoo.com Immanuel

Shawne Meriman sucks so bad . He thinks he is so good. Wow he injured Priest Holmes big hit sike! He is so weak last year he got trucked/blocked by short and strong Maurice Jones Drew. Also Antonio Cromartie got trucked by Ronnie Brown. In all Shawne Meriman sucks and the chargers suck. everybody sucks but you can’t forget the homeboy Ladainian Tomlinsin.

  • jonathan

To all you charger haters, why why why…. all your teams are the past and my team is the future, we still are AFC division champions, we might not have rings but when we get one it will be well worth it…SO DONT HATE…we might be slacking but please dont jump on the band wagon when the chargers start to come up again….CHARGERS TILL THE DAY I DIE….FUC* THE REST…..

  • charger hater but raiders lover

chargers r big LOSERS good luck or should i say bad luck charger fans

  • charger hater but raiders lover

    losers big losers

  • charger hater but raiders lover

hey im a raider fan and i live in sd desert bolt fan

  • CESARISAMISFIT

WHO INVITED THE RAIDER FAN? TYPICAL

  • marksd21

we all know that shawn could smear anyone on the broncos… L.T can stiff arm the whole brono team to the ground. and philip can out throw jay cutler both length wise and accurate wise. I hope you all come down to earth an realize that the broncos suck balls.

  • natelan

Broncos fans… You won the division this year by DEFAULT. Congratulations on “winning” the NFL’s 2nd worst division (followed by NFC West).

    Let’s agree on one thing…

BOTH OUR TEAMS SUCK THIS YEAR.

Let’s also both agree that the Ed Hocchuli gave you a free win against us this year.

Either way, neither of our teams will be donning a new championship ring this year. And next year, we both know who’s going to dominate the division… The Chargers.

  • Patrick

    The Chargers STILL suck!
