It's really only the top 6 slots or so that are ridiculously overpaid. I know, 'only'. It makes the top 5 or so spots in the draft kind of unappealing. Makes the 7-11 slots a lot more appealing because the price drops dramatically but usually the top 10 guys are all as likely to be quality as the others.

I mean, look at our guy. At #12 and he's 80% of our rookie pool but it's still only half of what #4 is getting. That's a steep drop for 8 places.

Not knowing how other sports do it as well as I know football, isnt there a slotting system in the NBA? Doesnt baseball have sort of an unofficial system? Anyone know about Hockey? It seems that there are some controls in place in other sports- why not in the NFL??

You know it is bad when the teams who are at the top of the draft want to get out, and there is nobody there to trade with because it's not worth the price and the contract to do so. Bad teams dont always want the high pick, because if they whiff on it they are going to be even worse and be out a TON of money.

I think the vets have a legit beef about the sizes of the early first rounders as well. Guys need to come in at a lower rate. If they show in their first season that they are the seocnd coming of John Elway then by all means restructure and cough up the 60M to keep him locked up and in town for a few years.

They need to just have fixed salaries for rookie contracts. You're drafted ## overall you get such and such pay for so many seasons. They said that with Upshaw standing up for these rookie contracts could be his ultimate demise. The veterans may boot him over it. Mawae was pissed that he couldn't get half the contract Jake Long received once hitting the market. I think Long is going to be awesome, but lets see him play a few downs first.

Additional thoughts.. Nice writeup on Michael Pittman. The Chiefs seem comfortable with Branden Albert at LT. I really hope that means our DEs can exploit him for 2 games this season.

Seriously though, the rookie contracts have gotten INSANE! Chris Long will sign a bigger contract as a rookie than over 95% of current NFL defensive players. JaMarcus Russell is one of the richest 50 athletes in any sport, according to Sports Illustrated. When is enough, enough?

I love this tidbit in the first article. Darren McFadden's guaranteed pay $26 million. Denver's entire draft class, $14 million. I think my new catch phrase is becoming more and more relevant... "Just overpay baby!"
