I had a feeling that there would be a rule, every time i come across something like this there's a rule ;)

And it is a good one. Everything around the draft and college sports makes the NFL more competitive and fair. And because of the physicality of the sport you can't expect someone who is 18 to take and give those big hits and they're not going to learn anything sitting on the practise squad are they? So college is as good a place as any to go.

Plus it stops ugly things like what has just happened here where manchester united have paid upwards of $1mill US for a 14 year old. Which is way too much pressure for a boy whose voice hasn't even broken.

Kyle's right. At this point the rule is three years out of High School (presumably playing at the college level). It has been challenged a few times, but most people (including myself) agree completely with this policy. In general, High School kids are NOT ready to play in the NFL.

An interesting note on this subject... John Madden commented that our very own D.J. Williams was the only player he had ever seen that he felt was capable of jumping right from HS to the NFL.

That was a pretty awesome compliment, but D.J. wisely chose to go to college and gained more experience as well as an eduction.

I personally, think that it's a great policy that the NFL has and hope they can continue it for a long time to come.

Great question MB. The NFL actually has rules against it. Three years minimum in college I believe, before a player can be drafted.

So he's off to college now and will be out in 3 or 4 years? Making Cutler a 6 year pro and entering what should be the best part of his career. Well I suppose as long as Jack doesn't end up wearing silver and black - I couldn't take that.

This may sound an odd question but over here in the UK where we don't have any University based sports, certainly don't have a draft and where a soccer player like Wayne Rooney is considered in his prime between 18-25 - what's stopping a team signing a player straight out of High School and letting him learn the pro game on a pro team rather than going to college?
